Beautiful shot, but perhaps a bit close for comfort with a 300mm lens?

Appears somewhat close, you are right. However, bull elk is going after a stray cow to bring her back to herd. He is not charging the photographer.

Been here....beautiful place. I took several memorable shots of golden eagles hunting marmots near the pass in Rocky Mtn. National Park. Saw three cougars there in one day.......might have been the same cat three different times. Also got to love Clark's Nutcrackers up there. Camp Robbers the locals call them. I saw one land in the middle of a kid's picnic table and actually take a bite out of a pizza sitting on the table and the kid was right there. Amazing birds. Oh......forgot to mention the two moose I saw that morning as well. RMNP.....an amazing place.

I see you shot at 800+mm but how close did you manage to get to this little fella? Were you able to access them easily from the road or did this require a bit of hiking through the alpine tundra?

Mike,

As close as 20 feet. Not far from road. As you may know, pika live at high elevations while making their home in talus slopes. See interesting link>>> http://ipnews.firstdaystory.com/atf.php?sid=784

FANtastic.

LesTensionUnited States wrote: Friday, November 9, 2007 - 7:36 PM

Dunno a lot about picas but I do know that they are not rodents. Like rabbits, they are lagomorphs: K-Animalis, P-Chordata, C-Mammalia, Order-Lagomorpha. Basic tooth differences are important in separating lagomorphs from rodents.

Mike,
I deleted reference to rodents based on your expertise. Also, I corrected the spelling from "pica" (wrong spelling) to "pika" (correct spelling)
