Oh rats!!

WARNING!! If you don't like these not so little rodents, please don't look at these pictures. These are brown rats, a native species of the UK, wild and amazingly clean and disease free....I spotted 4 of them taking advantage of the spilt seeds from a bird feeder in the North Cave wetlands. I personally like them...although they're not as cute as rabbits and squirrels!

The two youngsters

The sun's out now, they are a bit more nervous than the adults, but as long as I'm quiet they will carry on feeding.

Shouldn't they be hibernating at this time of the year? And they have already youngsters...

I'll have to do a little research...unless anyone can tell me. I know they burrow, I'm not entirely sure they hibernate though. I suppose they will have young if the food supply is OK, it certainly is here, the feeders are filled all year round.

Yes, hibernation is related with the lack of food...

They have more of a ridged back than mice by the looks of things.

It's quite easy to tell them apart.

See, their tail is as long as the rest of their body!!! :(

I know Tina...but what can they do? Their tails give them great balance when they climb, they also use them whilst swimming. Oh, I didn't tell you they are very good swimmers.
