Hartebeest are alcelaphine antelope that come in a huge array of regional forms, distinguishable by differences in horn shape, head shape, and coat color. 6-12 subspecies are recognized, depending on the authority, and all are capable of interbreeding despite their obvious differences. Very cool. Have been called a "superspecies" or "species complex."

Pictured here are the Khama from Namibia, Lelwel from central Kenya, and Kongoni from central Kenya. Khama and Lelwel differ most in their coat colors, while having very elongated foreheads and horn bases ("pedicles"). The Kongoni has very different horns, more curved out then in, shorter overall, and a much shorter horn base and forehead.
