For many years, starting in 1959, the Ford Galaxie was a mainstay in Ford's full-sized lineup. In the early sixties Ford embarked on a Total Performance program that made Ford a winner in NASCAR, at the Indy 500, and at the 24 Hours of LeMans. The car shown here, a 1963 1/2 Ford Galaxie 500 XL is powered by the legendary R-Code dual quad 406 V8. The semi-fastback "scatback" roofline was a mid-year introduction to give the car improved aerodynamics on NASCAR's super speedways like Daytona and in 1963 Ford drivers made the NASCAR super speedways their private playgrounds. This Galaxie 500 XL was not only equipped with the 406 V8 but with bucket seats, a four-speed manual transmission, and in this case a factory-installed AM/FM radio.
