This is the traditional costume of Tenerife, from the Orotava region, actually a very good friend of mine lent me the whole outfit for the "Baile de Magos" which is a huge event in every village once a year, this photo was taken as I was getting ready to go to the "Baile de Magos" which literaly translated means "country dwellers dance" in Orotava last June., the waistcoat is the most impressive item, the one that I am wearing was embroided by my friend by hand, she is actually making one for me as a present, but it,s going to take a while, as it is painstaking work.
The Baile de Magos is an absolutely brilliant night, it starts at midnight and continues till 8 the next morning, every plaza in the town has a different band for dancing, the one that I love best is the folklore music, I just love feeling a part of the whole culture, and of course there are plenty of kioks everywhere to get a drink for the thirst that you build up during the night!!!!!
Actually I shall be attending this years Baile de Magos in full Canarian costume this Friday!!! Husband is appointed babysitter for the night!!
Jane lives in the Canary Islands and this is a traditional costume from there taken during one of their festival days. I'll ask Jane to pop in and explain it better.
