"the mad modeler"

the Weekend Warrior

A few pics of the weekend warrior Willys as it went along. "Earl" and I wrenched this car from a SW&C drag model kit and it was not only my first "mod/bash" attempt, but also a dam blast to do! And believe it or not, it took 1st place and best in automotive at the Pittsburgh Hobbytown Spring '07 Show! Tried to give it that "made-in-the-backyard on a shoestring budget" look. A builder friend suggested calling the project "Lookin' for a Sponsor" so it stuck! The 55 Ford pickup that will haul this car to the track was my first "truck" attempt so kept my fingers crossed throughout but it turned out a-ok I guess. Thanks for peeking and as usual, any comments you have please lemme know- any input is very much appreciated~**~

Here she is in all her glory! Turned out lean, mean and one bad-to-the-bone bee-otch just like I hoped! The old-skool wrinkle-wall fatties from SMBC definitely did her justice.

one BAD bee-otch here eh? Love the way it looks from the rear. Went a little overboard on the wheelie bars but they work-

the project's inspiration~ It all started with this bee-otch! Saw it and just had to make one! Think it's a safe bet to say she was a nasty thang on the track. Gonna make mine a home garage built, low-budget "weekend warrior"- flat finish and all

A fairly early shot of the chassis in progress. It's cut and narrowed to take some fat wrinkle walls. The finish is flat black and dry polished with SNJ aluminum powder. The rear end is from a dragster and decided to forward mount the rear shocks.

the driver compartment of the "outlaw" Willys project. Not extremely detailed but gives the look I was after. Wanted a kind of "mix" of old school and a modern day pro stock. Did it work? I dunno....looks pretty good stuffed up into the body though!

Was getting the beast close to finished (finally!) Pretty much the stance I wanted- right down onto the asphalt! It was definitely an enjoyable build that's for sure. Always was a Willys fan and they just make a mean looking build~

Was pleased with the look of the chute packs and the rear end & wheelie bars in general. The wing is kind of basic but I think it works for the build considering I was trying for a true "shoestring budget" look here.

Trailer started as a (very basic) AMT kit I snatched off evil-bay. Did some photo research to get it a little more realistic looking~ Tire rack & shelf is scratch built and added the wood slat floor- just liked the way it looked!

Decent shot of the trailer here. Tried to make it as realistic as possible with wiring, safety chains, lights, etc.

Liked the way the tire hold-down straps turned out and the car/trailer combo overall. The dull coated black laquer works well for this one!

Liked this shot from above- kinda shows it off nice! All in all not a bad build- considering sitting it on a table or two and see what happens.

A little better look at the tire rack/shelf on the trailer. Originally wanted to use the shelf to hold the loading ramps but got it a little too high...they didn't quite fit! Oh well.....they'll sit in the truck bed I guess~
