Those were paddy wagons. They're probably all gone now.

I was just wondering, Does the CPD still use these? If so for what?

Yes. We still have a few of these Astro vans in service as K-9 vehicles.

These were useless! They were loaded with diamond plate and were so heavy the suspension could not handle the weight. Like me if you were over 6 feet tall you couldn't sit in the passenger seat.

Oh come on, Tim. These were sort of fun. I was assigned to this one for about a year. We installed a stereo in it. You never had to worry about falling asleep on midnights driving one because they rattled so loudly. The rear cargo doors wouldn't open so we never used the compartment in the back. Then we had a goof kick out the plexiglas partition and we couldn't use the compartment in the front either for a while.
How about hauling DOAs? We carried them in the Astrovan a few times too.

Just another one of the more interesting vehicles we've had through the years...

nice pic. we have 2 of those wagons and 2 brand new gmc full size vans in joliet. i drove one of the astros the other night, 115k miles on it and still running good. also looks good running hot at night with the strobes. all other joliet units have halogen rotators. i'm starting a squadrol collection. where can i find (around chicago) diecast squadrols and pictures of squadrols???
