Whew! As of 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, 5/19, all the pictures I took were posted.

The first 3 pics I posted were taken by Pete Thalmann and his amazing electric camera. He sent them to me, and I posted them immediately. They are all mixed in with my photos now. If you have pictures you want posted, send them to me.

A note about identification: the first three pages have the photos where I did not have full identification. If I haven't identified you in the name of the picture, send me your name and the picture's number, and I'll put your name on your face.

About 370 pictures are digital; their names all end in a "2xxx" number. About 90 pictures are film pictures; their names end in "512-xx." Send these numbers with your names.

This is the most pictures I've ever taken at an event. If I didn't get your picture, it wasn't for lack of trying!

UConn - Women Only - April 19, 2002
Apr 19, 2002

I finished uploading on Tuesday, 4/23.

At UConn, the women competed Friday, and the men competed Saturday. We only went to the Friday meet, so that's why there are no men in these pictures.

Film pictures have the number "419X" at the end of the name. Digital pictures have the number"22XX" at the end. I expect to bring the film pictures for people to take after the meet on April 28.

The first picture is an example of what can happen when a freshman is left unsupervised with tongue tattooing lollipops. Let this be a lesson to you all.

Brown Home April 13, 2002
Apr 13, 2002

There are much fewer photos--25--this week because I was busy with other things at the meet.

My wife, Dana, and I officiate at most Brown home meets. Dana was at a conference in Tucson, so I came alone. I officiated at the hammer throw and the discus.

I took a few pictures when those events weren't going, but there aren't many breaks, and discus was the last event to finish, after all the runners had gone home.

I took mostly pictures of the athletes' families. I took some film pictures of the pole vaulters.

Kim Fogarty took a nice picture of me with our daughter, Joanna '03, who is the team's manager.

Despite my gruff and rough-hewn demeanor, I would be happy to hear comments about the pictures I take. If you'd like to see some kind of picture, write, and I'll see what I can do.

But, remember, picture taking at track meets is highly opportunistic. There can be 75 to 100 Brown athletes competing in big meets. Sometimes 10 athletes are competing at the same moment. It's not possible to get everybody at every meet.

Harvard April 6, 2002
Apr 6, 2002

I finished uploading all my pictures on April 10.

This was a bright, cold day in Cambridge. The wind was blowing, and it felt like it was about 30 degrees out.

The athletes just couldn't get warm, it seems.

Heps Indoors Feb 23 & 24, 2002
Feb 24, 2002

These are all the digital photos I took, plus a few scanned film photos. I think I got a picture of almost everyone who competed at the event, as well as most of the assorted hangers-on (except, alas, Dana and me!)

A couple of notes: Taking digital pictures of fast-moving subjects indoors is difficult with all but professional digital cameras. You'll notice many of the still photos came out better. Digital cameras don't freeze action as well as film cameras. I took every picture I could. There are more of distance runners because they go 'round so many times. There are fewer of sprinters because they only pass by once, they are often blocked by a competitor, or there are multiple Brown runners in a heat, and I can get a shot of only one. Field events such as the throws and pole vault are hard to shoot; I often just take still pictures of those competitors.

If I missed a picture of your kid, or if the picture I got is blurry, two thoughts: (1) Sorry 'bout that, but give credit for the effort--of the nine schools at the Heps, I was the only on-the-infield photographer who took photos from the beginning to the end of both days, and only 2 other schools had photographers taking any pictures at all; and (2) Our older daughter ran in 12 seasons in 4 years at Brown, but, because we were cheering and supporting rather than photographing, we have virtually no pictures of her, so we know how you feel.

Women and men at Harvard with Cornell. It is difficult to take photos of jumpers and sprinters indoors without complicated and expensive flash equipment. It is hard to get close enough to them to use the flash on a camera.
