Owned by the bishops of St. David's the majority of the work done on this monument took place during and soon after the reign of Edward I (late 13th and early 14th centuries).
Built in 1176 on the site of a 6th century monastery founded by St. David the patron Saint of Wales. He also lends his name to the settlement that grew up around the cathedral. No more than a large village in size it gets city status due to the cathedral (and thus is the smallest city in Britain).
