Old Blue.
I bought her from Gateway Toyota when she was a mere three and change years old. I remember thinking about buying a new one but by then they were automatics and I wanted a standard tranny.
By this time I was running a 1979 FJ40 trailriding and so were alot of other friends around me in the club Totally Landcruisers of NJ. The 40 was by no means a commuter rig so I thought about the 60 series. I remember looking in the newspaper and two were listed in the Gateway ad. One was blue the other silver. The blue one had only about 28,000 on her so home she came. I think I paid around 12 grand and traded in my Subaru.
What's funny is on a trip to see my friends mom down in Roanoke, Va that almost came to a reality. I was at a dealer getting the thermostat replaced.(long story there) There out front of the dealership was a beautiful brand new white1990 FJ62 perched up on the ramp to show her off. I'm thinking the window sticker said 30 some thousand. I almost walked into the sales office. Almost.
I ran her for a few years bone stock. I then let myself get talked into de-smogging her and going with a Weber carb. Don't get me wrong it ran a little better but now passing emmisions turned into a nightmare. Only with the help of a local garage did she squeek by.
About a year after the carb change I put on an Old Man emu spring and shock change. What a beautiful thing and nicer ride.
I took care of her as best I could which resulted in not any real body rust advancing. For the last four years she was garaged and undriven.
Thankfully I never sold her and in the last few months have gotten a spark to restore her back to OEM under the hood and a plan to replace and paint alot of the rest.
Another project I need like a hole in the head.
I've always loved the Toyota Lancruisers and hope to be cruising around in a like new one sometime in the not to distant future.
These pics will be of the tearing down, parts accumulations, and building back up. More than anything, this photo album will probably help me put it all back together right! ;)
