The Decision

Last relaxer Nov 1 2008

Well I decided enough is enough. I am tired of going to the salon every six to eight weeks for touch ups. When I lived in Cali, it was a lot cheaper to get my hair done. As I slowly made my way across the country, it got more and more expensive. Also, I am tired of the flatness and thinness of my hair. It has always been very fine. It takes to a relaxer like a duck to water, and is shine and bouncy, but it is so flat and thin looking. It has volume after a roller set, but after wrapping, it loses volume.

I haven’t had natural hair since sixth grade. I am excited to meet it again. All I can remember is my mom washing, greasing, and plaiting my hair. It always seemed like such a hassle.
This isn’t the first time I thought about going natural. Nov 2007, I was visiting family in NC and went to my aunt’s stylist. She was really into going natural. She talked with me about, and I said it would be too difficult to maintain. She was in NC and I was in VA. Ididnt have any info on how to maintain it. She was in the process of transitioning her hair. I moved to VA, and forgot about it.

I was at work one day thinking, it’s about that time again. I kept saying I would call and make an appointment for a touchup. I drove past the salon a couple of times and thought about just dropping in. But something stopped me. I decided enough is enough. I am tired of going to the salon, and spending the time and money. And I said no more relaxers. Then I thought what now? I don’t know the first thing about natural hair care. I work in technology and decided I will goggle it, not really expecting to find much info. I was shocked at all the websites dedicated to natural hair care. I found motowngirl.com and looked through the articles. Found the spotlights, and found the links to Fotki, and viola! Here I am. I have been skulking in the background, devouring ladies journeys becoming natural. I realized, it’s not a hairstyle, but a state of mind. There is so much support out there and I am excited. As they use to say in the Navy when I first joined, "Let the journey begin."

The Transition

As I read through different albums, I see everyone has there ulitmate goal with their hair. Health, growth, becoming all natural. Growth seems to be the most popular goal. I dont know if that will be my goal. Even with relaxed hair I tended to keep it at shoulder length or shorter. It seems to take some girls hours to do their hair, and I dont have the time or patience for that. So, I 'll have to see as I go along. I dont want to spend more thant a couple of hours working on my hair. I like the length it is at right now. Takes me about 15 mins to detangle an twist after a wash. The wash and go sound like heavan to me, the perfect style.
