so beautiful again, what great light and drama in the sky. this one came up on the community page. i think you should put up some lesser photos as well, you know, for balance, and to leave some hope for beginners. :-) want to borrow some of mine? :-)

    *cough*
    :)
interestingly, there are photos that look very nice on the screen, and as I print them 16x24 or something, they don't look as good, and some look a whole lot better printed. Go figure. This one is in the first category. I was a bit disappointed by the print look, may be simply not my taste. My friends love it on their wall.

There's a well written and easy to follow book I just received that seems to answer at least my questions about digital photo editing and printing called Digital Photography 2nd Edition by Eismann, Duggan & Grey. Even in the absence of Photoshop CS and a calibrated monitor, I think it can make a huge difference. Maybe you know a lot about editing anyway, but I thought to mention it. I've test/printed some of my favorite photos and my errrors with unsharpen mask and other adjustments not made in layers really do show.

I am all set as far as color profiles, etc. My rant was more about the perception. Some images look good on the screen and make less interesting prints. Some images look good small, some look good poster-size only not because of technical things, like USM (you are right, USM is usually done with specific size in mind), but because of what's in the picture.
Since I shoot in Nikon raw, I do most post-processing in Nikon Capture, and use photoshop CS for major tweaking or special effects only, if necessary.
