Ground Breaking Ceremonies for Fire & EMS Memorial
May 29, 2008

The Delaware County Fire & EMS Assosciation is pleased that the ground breaking for the Delaware County Fire & Ems Memorial has finally arrived. This memorial will be a tribute to thos Fire Fighters, EMS personnel, and Fire Police Officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, protecting the citizens of Delaware County. This Memorial is being placed in Rose Tree Park to sit proudly next to the already existing Delaware County law Enforcement Memorial. Participating in the ground breaking were: several State Government Officials, members of Delaware County Council, Delaware County District Attorney, Representatives from the Kangas, Reagan and Picozzi families, as well as the Brookhaven, Sharon Hill and Lower Chichester Fire Companies.

The Delaware County Fire & Ems Assosciation is comprised of members from stations throughout Delaware County. The Assosciation has been working on bringing this memorial to fruition for several years. Within the assosciation there are several committes and a business manager, each tasked with different responsibilities. The research committee, as of todays date has reached out to each of the County's Fire & EMS Companies and has a total of 59 members lost in the line of duty. This number does not include the 25 and counting deaths from those that responded to the Wade Dump Incident. For information regarding fallen members, please contact Rich R. Heffernan Jr. at Heff37@icdc.com

The fundraising comittee has a large scale event planned at the Springfield Country Club on Septmeber 7th, 2008 to help raise funds for the construction & maintenance of the memorial. This event will be open to the public. In addition, there are personalized commemorative bricks available for $50, which will be placed at the memorial. For information on the personnalized bricks, please contact Larry Baker at LBaker007@aol.com

The assosciation has also constructed a website to keep those interested in the memorial updated as we progress along to completion. Hopefully, if all goes as planned, the committe would like to dedicate the memorial in October of 2008. Please visit the website at
www.delcolodd.com for further information. Questions can be directed to Mike Norman Jr at Capt5612@aol.com

Benefit held at Springfield Country Club
Sep 7, 2008

A benefit was held at the Springfield Country Club to help raise funds for the construction of the Delaware County Fallen Fire Fighter and EMS Memorial. The benefit was a huge success with a large crowd on hand. A 50/50 drawing was held along with the selling of bricks to be placed at the Memorial. The winner of the 50/50, Lt. Joe Fraatz from Springfield Fire Company quickly returned his winnings back to the memorial fund. The Memorial construction has begun with the ground breaking and footers having been poured. For more information on the Memorial go to this link: http://www.delcolodd.com/index.php

Construction of the Memorial
Sep 9, 2008

This folder will hold pictures of the progress of the construction of the Memorial. I will update this as I get pictures of the ongoing progress. To date, We have had the ground breaking ceremonies, and the footers have been poured. Today the 9th of sept. 9,000 bricks were delivered to the site. The construction will begin tomorrow the 10th, construction will begin at 7am.
9-10-08: Todays progress starts with image 6842, 2 coarses of brick and 1 coarse of block went up. The first laying of brick is slower and time consuming to make sure the layout is correct. It's already looking good as it's taking shape.
9-11-08 - Construction resumed today with a stoppage to partake in 9-11 ceremonies being held. One wall is now approx 95% complete. Todays progress begins with image 6865.
9-12-08 - Workers were moving at a good clip today and nearly completed one wall. They had the 2nd wall well on it's way also and would probably have completed it before days end, but the weather decided to intercede. Todays progress begins with image 6993
9-13-08 - The 1st wall was completed today, as well as the foundation for the center piece and bell was dug and poured. Todays progress begins with image 7019
9-15-08 - The 2nd wall was completed today and the 3rd wall is near 90% complete. Today starts with image 7127
9-16-08 - Todays work starts with image 7150. 3 walls are now complete, with the 4th just over a 3rd done. The 4th wall will probably be completed tomorrow. Work on the center piece will start tomorrow, followed by the work on the pavement and layout for the bricks.
9-17-08 - The 4th wall is nearly complete and construction of the center piece which will hold the bell has been started. Todays progress starts with image 7161.
9-18-08 - Todays images start with #7189. All 4 walls are now complete except for the caps which will be installed when delivered. The foundation for the centerpiece is also now complete. Looking closely at some of todays pictures you can see the big difference between the walls that have been cleaned and the ones remaining to be cleaned. The builders were all very happy to be a part of this and can't wait themselves to see the completed memorial.
10-6-08 - It's been awhile since I was out . Since my last visit a lot of cleaning up and grading has been done. Today, some much needed landscaping was done. A crew from 09 came out and wheeled the tons of stone from the parking lot to the inside of the memorial where the concrete will be poured tomorrow. Cassidy construction laid out the lines and graded the stone.
10-7-08 - Today the concrete was poured over the stone. Cassidy also did todays concrete work. A load of paver bricks was also delivered. These bricks along with the engraved bricks will be placed over the concrete.
10-8 -08 - Today the sidewalk that will go around the outside of the memorial was dug and formed out. Todays images are on page #7
10-9-08 - The remainder of the walkway was dug, graded & formed out today. This will all be poured tomorrow, completing the walkway around the memorial and adjoinng the walkways to both memorials and parking lot. Todays images are on page #8
10-14-08 - The ground around the memorial was graded and re-contoured , then hydro seeded. The pavers should start going in tomorrow.

Delaware County Fallen Firefighter & Ems Memorial Dedication
Nov 1, 2008

The dedication for the Memorial was held today at Rose tree Park. A long held dream for many finally became a reality as the names for each fallen member were called out while a helmet was placed by the fallen members Company, and roses by the families at each plaque. Many Fire & Ems personell were on hand for the grand ceremonies, as well as family and government officials. The Memorial, in the shape of a Maltese Cross sits side by side with the memorial for fallen Law enforcement personell. 65 Plaques on the walls bear the names of all those lost in the line of duty in Delaware County dating back to 1882. 1 plaque bears the name of the only Philadelphia Firefighter to lose his life in the line of duty outside of city limits. Another plaque was dedicated to all the lives lost and those whose lives have been changed by the Wade toxic dump fire in Chester City. The Memorial is truly a site to behold, and shows all of the planning, dedication and hard work that went into completing this project.

Note: There are over 900 photos from this event. In order not to slight anyone, ALL photos have been placed in this album. Any Fire Company or Family member wishing a picture from this site. If writing me personally thru email, please include both numbers on the picture. The number they fall numerically in line and the img number. Thanks
