Whale Watching – 3/21/10

Finally sailed with Newport Landing instead of through Davey's Locker. The Patriot was narrower and held fewer passengers than the Ocean Explorer, but ended up being our best outing yet. For a while we thought we wouldn't see anything, with overcast skies, fog and a lack of marine life, but once a pair of Grays surfaced we found ourselves right alongside a mother and calf who were very active, at one point even breaching about 50 feet off our starboard side. We followed them for about 30 minutes then broke off, found a few dolphins, and passed the harbor seals on the way back in. Pretty great day.
