Dear Friends of Flamingo Gardens:

Flamingo Garden's Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary would like to cordially invite you to participate in Walk in Wild on National Bird Day, January 5th, 2013 from 8am- 10am. The Walk will begin in our courtyard area at 8am for registration and sign-in, then proceed on a one mile walk through the gardens and along the tram trail which is usually closed to foot traffic. Along the trail participants will get to view some of the beautiful animals that inhabit the Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary. The Walk will end back at the courtyard where participants will be able to see the animals more up close and personal. Beverages and light foods will be provided and participants will get a chance to interact with employees, sponsors and other donors. All participants will receive a registration goodie bag upon completion of the Walk. There will also be giveaways and door prizes for participants.

In addition to walkers, Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary is looking for event sponsors and in-kind donors.

Kids will love the story time with friendly witches and their creepy pets! Costume parade starts at 11:30am, and story time is at noon, followed by other tricks and treats. Visitors can also view the Great Scarecrows throughout the botanical gardens and "Creepy Crawlers" photo exhibit in the Gallery.

Breeding Season Flamingo Gardens in Davie florida 2012!

This year Flamingo Gardens received 18 Black necked Stilt eggs from Sawgrass Recreational Park. During extreme thunderstorms the eggs of the Stilts had broken off of the islands where they nest and were washing away in the storm. The staff at Sawgrass Recreational Park rescued eighteen eggs and temporarily incubated them. As a few hatched they called us to see if we could raise them. Although we had never raised this species before we took them in and gave it our best shot. Amazingly, out of the eighteen eggs, one hundred percent of them hatched and every bird lived.
Today September the 21, 2009 all eighteen Stilts were released back into the wild. Early this morning they were loaded in crates and transported to Green Cay Nature Center in Boynton Beach, Florida. As we pulled out of Flamingo Gardens property Born to be Wild was playing on the radio, it was a good sign.
Mike and I met with Donald Campbell and took the Stilts to an area where they are commonly found. As the air kennels opened they patiently exited the crates spreading their wings and frolicking around. Some slowly flew off and called to each other. Some would fly back and forth landing with their group while others chose to land nearby. By the time we left you could hear the sounds of the Black necked Stilts all throughout Green Cay.
I can not even begin to thank the great employees and volunteers at Flamingo Gardens for their dedication and hard work with the Stilts. These Stilts are eighteen more reasons why we must continue to do what we do. We don’t just save lives we begin legacies.
