Avebury mistery - stones, circles, mounds, graves and horses

The area around Avebury contains some of the most famous and enigmatic ancient monuments in the British Isles and indeed the world. Apart from the stone circle complex which encompasses part of the village of Avebury, there are the nearby familiar landmarks of Silbury Hill, West Kennet Long Barrow, Windmill Hill and the Sanctuary to name but a few. Slightly further afield there are other sites of antiquity such as the Uffington Horse hill figure, Old Sarum and, of course, perhaps the most well known of British ancient monuments, Stonehenge.

Welcome to barrow

As far as long barrows go, it is extremely spacious and excavations have revealed the bones of at least forty-six people.
