Klock's Island Trail, Fayette, Iowa, A walk from the Main St. area of Fayette westward to Klock's Island and back on the new hiking/biking trail. The trail runs on the south side of the Volga River ...more past the old Shaffer's Hole. It crosses the old stage trail just west of the present Hwy 150 bridge. The stage trail ran north from the old Lover's Leap road and then up through a rugged valley trail to the top of the north rim hill over Westfield and by the old pry quarry, proceeding toward westward villages. Westfield village was along the present Hwy 93, from west of the bridge down to near the first/east brige near Klock's Island. The eastern Klock's Island bridge crosses the old mill run that brought a head of water from the south edge of Klock's Island to the old Woolen Mill. The trail passes through the mill grounds on the trail curves between the Hwy 93 and Hwy 150 bridges. The first water mill in the valley built by James Alexander in 1849/1850 and was at the location of the start of what would become the mill run. The new trail runs through some very early settlement history of the Westfield valley starting in 1849. iowaz@hotmail.com - photos: 161 (124 MB)
