- The Kaufman family built one of the very early mills in Fayette Co, Iowa, in 1851/52 on Brush Creek, about two miles south of Wadena, Iowa. Jacob Kaufman also owned considerable hill/timber land to the west of the mill area. An early pioneer village/neighborhood with a school, P.O., craftsman, merchant, sprang up around this location and was known as Mill Grove. The mill and farm was sold to the Philander Rawson family about 1867. The Rawson's ran the mill site until it was abandoned in the early 1900's. The area supplied lumber for much of the area and their 'yards' in Volga, Wadena, Arlington. Initially the mill was a water mill, with an early steam engine being brought in by the late 1850's. Both steam and water were used for sawing lumber. The water mill was flooded out several times and not rebuilt after the mid 1860's, after which steam became the power source. Wood supplied the fuel for the steam engine. It was at the Kaufman Mill that the Hopson family came down the Brush Creek valley from the prairie of Smithfield Twp to acquire wood and clay for their pottery operation. Peterman's 'Fayette County Iowa History 1840-1850+. Peterman came with his family to Fayette villag ...more e in the mid 1850's and was a Fayette businessman. In the early 1900's he became interested in writing some articles on early pioneer history. Although numberous data are from the 1878 History and material Fitch was working on for his 1910 History, there is added informaiton and observations from a person actually living in Fayette and the country in the eary days of white settlement. Corn Hill School 1909 Spelling Book (copyright 1897), section 1, Smithfield Twp, Fayette Co, Iowa. ...more Student Henry L. Toutsch, Jan 4, 1909 Donated/returned to Fayette Co. by C. Trevillyan from GA who found the book in Moline, IL. Nicholas Toutsch, b. 1853 in Germany came to the Elkader area of Clayton Co. He moved to his late father/law F. Snedigar's farm in sec 1 after 1900, which was the Corn Hill P.O. and School area. The Corn Hill neighborhood was a very historical early neighborhood along the Mission Trail between Brush Creek (Arlingotn) and Fayette. Nic's wilfe was Macella M. Snedigar, b. 1862. Childern were Marshall B., b. 1892, Harvey N., b.1893 (he would farm two miles S. of Main St. Fayette), Henry, b. 1899 (who would move into Fayette village and live with Mrs. Sperry until his death in 1931). A viist to the Seaton P.O. area in the summer of 2006. Seation P.O. operated from 1866-1881 and was ...more out in the wet/tall grass prairie county a few miles west of Brush Creek/Arlington, south of Fayette, ExSE of Maynard. There was a school, smith, merchant at the corners area of Seaton (surname in the area). A church was a a mile east, the Parker farm a mile+ to the ExSE, Gardern Prairie Ch/Cem 2+mi ExSE. Pics are sequenced from the approach to Seaton from the east, pans/zooms around the area, pans from the Seaton corner, pics from the Volga River bridge just to the north of the P.O. From Seaton, traveling a mile east and a half mile south, then stopping at the old Norman Parker farm, SW1/4 of sec 34, Smithfield Twp. Norman was the father of George Parker of Parker Pen fame. Norman moved into Randalia and then to Fayette village, while George went on to Janesville, Wisc as a student/teacher of telegraphy and then establish the Parker Pen Co. Next a few pics were taken from the road a mile to the east of the Parker farm with zooms across the farm to Seaton and Maynard, and to the east to the Garden Prairie Ch/Cem.
