Sean Geese 2014 Jan 26
Jan 26, 2014

I hunted an oats field on private ground in Hunters, WA (Stevens Co.) with Joel, Johnny, Dave & Jay ...more

on an invite from the Deer Park crew. I was supposed to meet Joel & Johnny in Pasco so we could all ride up together but I set my alarm for 12:50 p.m. instead of a.m. and woke up at 2:00 a.m. and had to make the 2 hour and 45 minute drive up alone to make the hunt. The hunt didn't go as well as we had hoped but we punched out 14 nice honkers to end the waterfowl season. We set the blinds in the field and had them stalked with oats but the geese seemed leery of our set up right off the bat. We had to pull some decoys from the spread and put them around us and that seemed to help. The highlight of the morning was pulling in a flock of 9 and killing 8 of them. The rest of our geese were all knocked out of flocks that wouldn't hit the hole just right and had to be cut. The opportunity was there to get our geese but we just couldn't convert on them and by the time we thought we had it figured out, the flight died.

I hunted a popular public spot with Grant, Joel and Jerry. We are still stuck in an inversion with t ...more

emperatures staying in the low 30's with no wind and still no new ducks in the area. This was the new slowest hunt at this spot this year and the 2nd consecutive time we didn't limit on ducks on it. We ended up with 17 ducks (14 MD, 2 MH, 1 PD) and a Honker. We did shoot our 1,000th duck/goose on the hunt's I have participated on this hunt. The mallards were thin in numbers but the predominant duck on this hunt. We got a late start after having issues with the boat battery and had to be picked up by another boat just to get out to the spot. We never had a widgeon or pintail decoy the entire hunt and I was fortunate to make a long shot on a pinnie drake to add the only other species besides mallards to our take. The lone goose we got was also another long poke when a single came over the blind. There were several highlight shots on ducks as they would not decoy readily at all on this hunt though we did have a few singles and doubles of mallards commit well to the spread. Jerry's BLM, Gunner, handled the retrieving duties by himself and did an outstanding job. It was a decent hunt but below the expectations we have become accustomed to from this spot. This was the last duck hunt of the year for me in what was another outstanding year overall but January was a grind as the weather was just not conducive to shuffling new ducks into our area.

I hunted a popular public spot with Grant, Joel and Garret. We are stuck in an inversion still with ...more

temperatures staying in the low 30's with no wind and no new ducks in the area all of a sudden. This was the slowest hunt at this spot this year and the first time we didn't limit on ducks on it. We ended up with 19 ducks (9 MD, 1 MH, 3 PD, 6 WD) and a huge Honker. The mallards were next to non-existent but we did have a nice group commit early in the hunt but shot poorly and only took 3 out of it. We had only one group of widgeon decoy and we managed to kill 6 drakes out of it. Another highlight was a group of 5 pintails giving us a close enough look that we took 3 drakes out of it. We had a pair of honkers come close enough for a shot and we dropped one but should have had the other as well. Grant's YLM, Sonny, handled the retrieving duties solo today and did a darn fine job. It was a decent hunt but below the expectations we have become accustomed to from this spot. The final weekend coming up is looking scary but hopefully something will break free to finish strong.

I hunted a private pond with Joel & Cody. This hunt was a major disappointment. We soft lofted the c ...more

ouple hundred ducks off the pond in the morning and got set up and they never came back until the very end of the day. We shot a total of 7 mallards (5 drakes, 2 hens) and 5 of those came in the last 10 minutes of shooting time. I felt terrible for keeping Cody out there all day but I just felt like the ducks were going to come back. We let the pond rest for 2 days and we never even shot into the mallards on Friday so I'm just stumped as to why they would be so spooky. Even when they did come back, they didn't work well at all and we had to take ducks on the pass rather than back winging into the decoys. It sure doesn't look good to finish out the season on the pond even though it has open water. We finished up so late and took so long finding one of the dead ducks that I didn’t have good enough light for pictures.

I hunted some private ground north of town by myself after scouting for ducks first thing in the mor ...more

ning. The last time I hunted this place, we missed finding a large covey that we found the first time we hunted it and I was hoping to find them this time. We hit the jackpot when we caught them on the edge of a corn field in some thick brush and they flushed wild and I wasn't able to connect on a couple tough shots on the covey raise. I decided to go find another covey and then come back to where I think the covey flew and landed. The dogs found only 3 quail where the other covey usually hangs out and I was able to kill one of them. I'm guessing they had got broke up that morning somehow so I went back after the original covey. After an exhaustive search for the original covey, I was about to give up when one flushed in some thick cattails and then the fun & work began. The next half hour was constant points by Jock & Jr. and I was doing my part on the killing. The retrieves were nightmarish with most of them falling in jungle like cover. A couple of them fell across the canyon and I had to keep track of my take closely to count them in the bag. Once I got 8 quail, we pulled off the scattered singles to go back and get the last 2 that fell on the other side of the canyon. I had doubled on a pair of quail at one point before turning back and Jock actually brought both back to me in his mouth. That's the first time I've ever seen him do that. The dogs found the last 2 that I had killed earlier but the hunt ended on a rough note when Rocky actually found the last one and he immediately started chewing on the bird. That makes the last 3 quail he has found that he's tried to do that after not doing it all season. I'm really on the fence on what to do with him. He has not shown much progress over the course of the season on finding birds and now he is chewing birds which I absolutely will not tolerate. On a sad note, this hunt may have possibly been Junior's last one ever. His hips have deteriorated so bad in the last year that I fear he may be done hunting by next season. If so, he went out on a good one.

I hunted a private corn field with Johnny, Grant and our host, John. We decided to do an afternoon h ...more

unt based on the geese flying in the afternoons only the prior several days before this hunt. As we were setting up around 11:30, the geese were flying out in droves to feed so we rushed to get set up. We picked a weedy spot in the middle of the corn stubble field in what should have been a great hide and my scouting the prior day showed it was the X in that field. Well, you still have to fool late season geese and these geese were no dummies. We had plenty of geese to work with even though we missed the early flight but we just couldn't get many to commit to our spread and had to start taking them on their passes. We were eeking out a few at a time and then towards the end of the hunt, we finally got some small groups and pairs of honks to give us a good look but we just ran out of time to get our full limit and ended up with 12 geese & 3 mallards that decoyed very nicely. 9 of the 12 geese were big honkers. We pounded a couple others that just shook off the punishment we gave them. They sure are tough birds to kill. It was a good hunt overall and we were lucky to get in on a great piece of property.

I hunted a private pond with Joel & Tony. It was the first time we have hunted the pond since Nov. 2 ...more

2nd. The ice had been off of the pond for a week & we let it build up to a couple hundred ducks and knew it was going to be marginal on whether there was enough ducks to have a good hunt so we kept it to 3 guys when Kyle decided not to go at the last minute. The fog killed us on this hunt. We could hear mallards flying in the fog but could not see them and they just didn't decide to come back in the numbers we needed to have a limit shoot. Thankfully, some widgeon and teal decided to play and we were able to get all of those that worked our decoy spread. The mallards evaded us this day and we only ended up with 1 mallard drake. I passed up an opportunity to hunt a public spot on the river with the rest of the group and they had a banner day shooting 56 ducks pretty quickly. The fog finally lifted enough to see but the ducks just didn't come back and we called the hunt at around 11. It doesn't look good for the pond to finish out the season with another long term inversion in the forecast.

y, we had the popular place to ourselves again. The hunt started out pretty slow and our plans of all green with dashes of salt fizzled quickly so we started shooting what we were given. It was the typical one to three duck show and we just kept at it until we shot our 28th duck at 11:43. There were some highlight reel shots along the way. We were treated to a goose show throughout the morning including a neck collared goose that we didn't realize was in the decoys when we shot a couple of ducks. Of course we had geese since it was a non-goose day beings it was Tuesday. I was able to get a Greater scaup drake (blue bill) that will be going to the taxidermist. To my knowledge, I've never shot one in my life and this one was a beauty. We ended up shooting 5 scaup (2 drakes, 3 hens) on the day which is highly unusual for this spot. We added 13 mallard drakes, 5 mallard hens, 4 widgeon drakes, & 1 widgeon hen to our 28 duck limit. Johnny's YLF, Penny, and Jerry's BLM, Gunner, handled the retrieving duties.

After an unsuccessful morning scouting mission for ducks, Grant and I loaded up my dogs and headed o ...more

ut to a private land spot for an afternoon upland hunt on the last day of pheasant season. We started our hunt in a sagebrush patch and didn't find a pheasant where I saw about 10 last time but did find feathers from a rooster that a coyote or hawk must have got. We hit a thick sagebrush patch with tons of blow in tumbleweeds and had 4 different roosters blow out before we could get close. We moved on to another patch of sage & weeds and the dogs got birdy and a covey of quail erupted and I dropped one and missed a long shot. Of course, the rest got up at point blank range while I stood there with and empty gun. Grant wasn't able to shoot due to the dogs being in the flight path of some of the quail. We followed the covey to where I thought they went but only found one that Grant missed. Jr. went on point in some seriously thick stuff and I went in to flush what I thought was a quail and a rooster came out which I dumped with a quail load. We looked all over for the quail and finally Jock went on point in a big slash pile of trees and I had to literally tear down logs to get some quail to fly and shot a couple of them. Jock kept going back to the log pile and pointing but we could not get them to come out. We moved to an eye brow where I saw about 15 pheasant last time and found nothing this time. We finished up at another eye brow and swamp area and only saw one rooster that the dogs obviously missed as he got up where we had just walked a few minutes before. The wind was howling and blowing sand in our faces so bad that we called the hunt and ended the worst pheasant season I've ever had in this state. Ended up with 3 quail and a rooster and didn’t even get a picture of them due to the obnoxious weather.

I hunted the same public spot and blind as the prior day with Jerry and Joel. The wind was blowing e ...more

ven harder today and in spite of Jerry going even earlier to get the spot, we ended up with the same blind with the 3rd choice. As expected, the ducks were even more spooky today and the amount of sky busting that was going on at this place made it even more difficult. Despite the tougher conditions, we still eeked out a good hunt by shooting 20 ducks (9 widgeon drakes, 2 widgeon hens, 6 mallard drakes, 2 pintail drakes and 2 Ring-neck drakes). One of the blinds actually took one of our mallard drakes when it fell between us and them. Never knew guys could be so hard up for a duck that they wouldn't offer it up to us to come get. This hunt really showed some of the slob factor that I detest in my fellow hunters and though I've had a great run on public land lately, I really hope my private ground starts getting enough ducks to hunt soon.

I wanted 2 other blind locations but Jerry got beat in line for those spots. The ice had just come off the night before so I knew we would have some ducks wanting into this area and they showed up in good numbers. We had another group set up illegally across from us and I was pissed about it because they were too close to us but I vowed to not let them shoot one duck. The hunt became a widgeon fest and we did some pretty good shooting to finish up with our 21 duck limit by 10:30. That encroaching group shot 1 duck while we were there so mission pretty much accomplished. I hate hunting public land but you have to go where the ducks are. Are ducks consisted of 12 widgeon drakes, 6 widgeon hens, 2 mallard drakes and 1 mallard hen. Jerry's BLM, Gunner, handled the retrieving shores and had to make some long retrieves as the wind would carry our dead ducks over a hundred yards down wind when we shot them in many cases.

sly, we had the place to ourselves again. This ended up being my most fun hunt of the year in spite of the birds being tough again and the fact that we had to grind it out until 12:30. Between all the jokes, good natured ribbing, Duck Dynasty beards and other festivities, it seemed like we were laughing the whole morning once we accepted our fate and knew we were going to have to put in our time to get our limits. Once again, the hunt started slowly but we just stuck with it and it actually picked up later in the morning. Grant, aka Willie, closed out the 28 duck limit by stoning a mallard drake and the fun ended but it will be a memorable hunt for years to come. We ended up with 18 mallard drakes, 8 mallard hens, 1 widgeon drake & 1 widgeon hen. Johnny's YLF, Penny and Jerry's BLM, Gunner, shared the retrieving duties and did a fantastic job.

lace to ourselves again this time which was nice. The birds didn't work extremely well but we managed to one & two them to death along with the occasional small group. Grant was having battery issues with the boat so Johnny was helping him work on it at shooting time. Spencer and I covered the blind and he shot the first lone drake to come in. We had talked about possibly doing an all green hunt but the hunt started pretty slow. A mallard drake and hen came in next and I stoned the drake and for some reason slid over and did the same to the hen. When the dog brought it back it had a band. So 500+ ducks later after I got my last banded duck, I finally got another. Of course, Grant was a little miffed when he came back to the blind and saw it since he has yet to ever get one. Timing is everything. We went on and had a great hunt by taking our 28 duck limit which was comprised of 21 mallard drakes, 5 mallard hens, 1 widgeon drake & 1 widgeon hen. Grant's YLM, Sonny, did a great job on fetching up our ducks.

It appears they were already broke up when the dogs found them or I just missed the initial flush but we only found a few of them after they got up. They flushed wild ahead for no shot and then buried in a log pile and once again I was only able to get 3 of them. These late season quail sure do know what to do to survive.

The dogs did well with Jock finding the most birds and Jr provided solid support. Rocky still seems to be trying to figure things out. He sure looks good running around and covering ground but is not finding birds on his own. He is backing the other dogs with an occasional correction needed to keep him in place.
I did not get a picture of the birds as it was getting late and I had to hustle to a spot to scout for ducks.

Eric joined me at that point and we went on to have a solid hunt on mallards, widgeon and pintail. Eric's BLM, Jasper, did a great job on retrieving our ducks. We ended up with our 14 bird limit that included 4 mallard drakes, 6 widgeon drakes, 3 pintail drakes and a widgeon hen. The day turned out quite well considering I had no clue where I was going to hunt to start the day.

It was nice having my son, Cody, join us as it had been quite a while since he had last hunted. We ended up with 17 ducks total and I shot another Mallard hybrid duck which is just crazy. We thought it was a mallard/GW teal cross but after doing some research, I think it's either a gadwall or shoveler cross but I'm going to have it and the other one DNA'd to determine for sure. All the ducks I've shot over the years and never a hybrid and now 2 in one season. Our duck take consisted of 10 mallard drakes, 6 mallard hens and the hybrid.

I hunted some private ground north of town by myself for quail and found 3 coveys on a quick afterno ...more

on hunt with my dogs. I was able to get a couple birds out of the 1st covey and a couple out of the 2nd covey. I drove to another spot nearby and found a big covey that flushed wild before I got to them. This covey literally kicked my butt for the first hour by going into the densest cover around in some very steep ground. The ground was frozen and frost covered as well as icy from water coming out of the hillside and I fell more times than I want to remember. I was burning up shells and missing like crazy and would occasionally knock one down and the dogs couldn't catch the cripples. It was the most maddening quail hunt I've ever been on. It felt like a chukar hunt only with thick cover instead of open ground. I had multiple dogs on point at times and had to make a decision on which one to go to - it was utter chaos. After not putting a single quail in the bag from that covey for that first hour and watching several go to the opposite hillside, I decided to try and get some self-respect back and some revenge on the little devils. As soon as I got over there, Jock went on point and he found one of my cripples and caught it for me. I climbed the hill and ran a line of cover that was still steep but fairly open. Jock and Junior began to nail quail and I reeled off 5 straight kill shots to wrap up the hunt with my 10 bird limit with about 15 minutes of shooting time left. That was some sweet revenge but I walked out of there a battered man. The dogs did some outstanding work. Jock has really filled the role vacated by Rose. I always knew he had it in him.

I hunted the same spot as the prior day but set up in the field with Tony. It took a lot longer to w ...more

eave the corn in the blinds than I anticipated and we missed the short, morning flight in the field. We never got a crack at any ducks or geese by the time Tony had to leave at noon. I decided to stay and hunt by myself. Almost as soon as he left, I finally got some ducks to work and shot a mallard drake and then a short time later got another mallard drake. Then the sun broke out and the flight shut down as fast as it started. Finally, the afternoon flight got going and I tripled on a group of mallards. Shortly after that, a lone goose bombed in to the spread and I added him to the take. Another group of mallards worked me and I put one more down. Then I got a group of about 500 ducks to work into me and I shot my last duck for a limit. It was a bit ridiculous to have that many come in and only be able to shoot one. I have to say perseverance paid off but it was a long day to lie in a blind.

and geese flew all day but they were very skittish and wouldn't finish well to the decoys but we kept at it and eventually got our 35 ducks and added 10 geese to the take with one of the geese being a prime, adult snow goose that Thor beat me to the shot. The freezing fog had coated everything in white & it was difficult to keep our blinds the same color with our body heat melting the frost off our tumble weeds in spite of using the snow spray. It worked out but it was a grind due to having to take shots at birds that wouldn't finish well to the decoy spread. The harvest was made up of 25 mallard drakes, 7 mallard hens, 3 pintail drakes, 9 lesser geese and 1 snow goose. It was a good day overall and nice to have a public field all to ourselves.

Dec 28, 2013

I’ve been on vacation for the last 2+ weeks and haven’t had time to send any pictures or reports sin ...more

ce I hunted 16 out of the last 17 days. As my buddy, Darin, said – I would have hunted all 17 if I wasn’t married and wanted to stay that way.
I hunted a private farm on 12/27 by myself after finding a covey of quail on it while scouting for ducks. The dogs did a great job on finding the big, split up covey and they held like champs and I did my part with the gun to limit on quail in 1/2 hour. It was a cold morning with the temp at 18 degrees so I was glad to get out of there quickly.
Since I got done so quickly with the quail and couldn’t find any ducks using fields, I did a solo afternoon duck hunt on public ground. It was kind of slow but good weather conditions for duck hunting. The ducks just didn't want anything to do with a decoy spread and I only managed to pull in a couple singles for easy shots and then had to make a few long shots on ducks skirting the spread. It's obvious the ducks have been here for quite some time & know the game.
Darin and I headed to Garfield Co. on the 28th for an upland hunt. I hadn’t been there since the beginning of the season and it wasn’t too good. Well, it wasn’t too good again. In fact it was worse. I managed to get 1 quail and 1 hun while Darin got a rooster and 2 quail. We only found one small covey of huns that allowed us in range to shoot and a big covey flushed wild and long and we never could find them again. We found a few roosters and I blew a couple difficult shots but Darin connected on his thankfully. We also found a small covey of quail that acted pretty wild along with the 3 roosters that blew out well ahead. I vowed not to return to Garfield Co. again this season and hope the birds make a recovery for next season.

asants in a quick afternoon hunt. We shot 18 quail total (lost 2 that won’t be in the picture) in an action packed upland hunt. I had been wanting to do this hunt for quite some time this season & finally got around to doing it. The dogs did great especially Jr. & Jock. Rocky still has a long ways to go on finding birds but did retrieve several quail.
I also did a quick upland hunt on 12/22 sandwiched around scouting for ducks/geese. I shot one rooster and 7 quail on that hunt. I did not get a chance to take pictures of this hunt.
I did another upland hunt on 12/24 but only had an hour to hunt. The dogs found 2 roosters that I got to shoot over points. Jr., the old dog, was the star on that hunt. We saw a few other pheasants but couldn’t get close enough for a shot. I totally forgot to bring the camera that day so no pictures, again.

oot & hunted the standing corn spot next to the pond again. We worked some nice flocks first thing in the morning to get the ball rolling. After an hour or so lull, the snow started falling & the wind picked up & it was on. We finished some big flocks & shot 28 ducks. We ended up taking 21 Mallard drakes, 4 Mallard hens, 2 Pintail drakes & 1 Pintail hen on an epic field hunt in the snow.

I went to my wife’s company Xmas party in Moses Lake on Friday night and the company paid for a hote ...more

l room so we took advantage of spending some time together that evening and slept in on Saturday morning. I had a private corn field lined up to hunt on Saturday afternoon but apparently the farmer had already given out permission prior to talking to me and must have forgot as the other party was already in the field and hunting when I swung by to check on the field on my way back from Moses Lake. We had an interesting conversation to work through the confusion and ultimately I lost out so I didn’t get a hunt in that day. Sunday we did another bust of a goose hunt. We shot a single honk that came into our spread and the 1,000+ geese that had been on the field the prior day never flew in the morning so we packed up our 150 decoy spread and headed home with our tails tucked between our legs. The geese have definitely given us the slip in the past several weeks. I packed up the dogs and headed back to the same general area as the goose hunt and turned them loose to try to kill some roosters. I got the only 2 that let me get in range and we saw a decent number of birds for this time of year. Nothing spectacular but a solid 2 hour solo hunt that was good for both me and the dogs. I’ve got a bunch of vacation time coming up so looking forward to that in the coming weeks.

upper twenties & there wasn't any breeze so the ducks flew even later this day than the day before. We hunted the same field as the day before but moved our position to the standing corn around the pond. We worked small groups, singles & doubles initially until the bigger groups made it to the field with only 15 minutes before the end of LST. We ended up taking what we could get when we landed some really big groups in the waning minutes. I was able to triple on the last 2 groups and took a pin drake & 2 mallard drakes on successive go's to end the hunt. We ended up with 18 ducks for the 3 of us with the take consisting of 11 mallard drakes, 5 mallard hens & 2 pintail drakes. It was the 1st time this year I was able to take my ideal limit of 5 green & 2 white. The field hunting is going to be down for a bit with the recent warm up in the temps & predicted continued warming but it was a good 6 day run where I saw 150 ducks & geese die on our hunts.

o the upper twenties & there wasn't any breeze so the ducks flew much later this day. We hunted the same spot as the day before but the ducks were more leery. The hunt started well with 2 pin drakes on the 1st go but our plan to shoot all drake mallards & drake pintails quickly went away when the bulk of the ducks didn't hit the field until 20 minutes before the end of LST. We ended up getting our 28 ducks but only had 16 mallard drakes to go with 8 mallard hens, 2 pintail drakes & 2 widgeon. 2 ducks were inadvertently left out of the picture as it was chaotic at the end getting packed up trying to beat darkness.
I’m going to try it one more time today while the temps are still pretty chilly but it may be a long shot if the ducks act like they did on this hunt.

6 honkers in a long, slow day but fortunately, another guy hunting in a different field invited us over to hunt the last hour and a half of the day w/ him & his son-in-law. As soon as we got set up, it was on for the ducks. They had 1 goose & 2 ducks when we got there & we proceeded to shoot 25 more ducks in the next hour and a half to make for an exciting finish to the day. We ended up with 7 geese (all honks) & 27 ducks (18 mallard drakes, 8 mallard hens & 1 pin hen). We were fortunate to get that invite!
