I have family ties here. My mother lives in Yuma and my sister and her husband live in Lake Havasu City. I visit whenever I can.

03/09&10/2003 The Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona
Mar 9, 2003

Though not a large area, this is an national monument of seemingly endless rock formations. It is relatively well-developed with trails and highly worth the effort needed to hike them. It is a photographer's wonderland. I spent two days in the monument and came back with many photos and two sore feet, not a bad trade-off. My camera at the time was a Sony Mavica 85 (1.3MP) so bear with me on the quality issues. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

This is a desert wonderland if you like cacti. There are barrels, chollas and no doubt a number of smaller ones among these giants. Each cactus has its own character. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

10/27/2004 Canyon De Chelly National Monument, Chinle, Arizona
Oct 27, 2004

This beautiful valley is rightfully protected and under the stewardship of the Navaho Indian Nation. Guided tours of the valley bottom may be arranged with a guide. The North and South rims are open to the public. Why this treasure is protected from unguided entry is obvious, even from the rim. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

11/12/2005 Pipe Spring National Monument, Fredonia, Arizona
Nov 12, 2005

This area was called the "Cattle Mission" or "Arizona Strip". Mormon pioneers settled this area along with their move into Utah but when statehood was granted the area went to Arizona which became a state much later in 1912. This operating ranch area is where livestock that were tithe offerings to the L.D.S. Church were kept and meat and dairy products were made for sale to markets and some returned to needy families within the church. Workers at the mission were settlers who volunteered their time and labor to do whatever needed to be done from herding cattle on the range to milking cows and making cheese at Pipe Spring. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

Nov 29, 2005

These photos were taken in Organ Pipe National Monument, Arizona. Beside its namesake cactus there are many other plants including cholla and saguaro cacti. This was a beautiful day for the visit to this area beside the Mexican border. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

05/25/2006 North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
May 25, 2006

This part of Grand Canyon National Park is closest to our home. The north rim is higher than the south rim and the road is closed in wintertime by snow. Good photography is more difficult because many of the views are in a southerly direction into the sun. The time of day is very important in the photographing of any particular area. It is a beautiful place to visit and well worth the time and effort to get there. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added. This album has been updated as of 03/21/2014.

05/30/2006 Cameron, Arizona
May 30, 2006

Cameron is the portal to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon driving in from the East. It is a very small town with one outstanding feature: the Cameron Trading Post. This is a great facility which provides clean lodging, good dining and Native American souvenir and gift shopping for visitors at reasonable prices even though it has a virtual monopoly as a near-canyon destination. Advance reservations are a must. I apologize for not having adequate pictures of the Trading Post. There was just so much scenery and interesting things elsewhere that I avoided the hassle of trying to photograph around the people. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

05/31/2006 East Side of the South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
May 31, 2006

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is a five-hour drive from our home so we stayed overnight in the small community of Cameron, Arizona at a wonderful place called the Cameron Trading Post. We spent two days on the South Rim, the minimum amount of time necessary to stop at most of the viewpoints and take photos galore. The first day was on this east side which can still be accessed by personal vehicle. Through pictures, this is my "East Side Story". This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

05/31/2006 West Side of the South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
May 31, 2006

This west side of the South Rim includes the main Visitors Center, Grand Canyon Village and all of the hotels, motels and dining facilities lacking on the east side. It has the heaviest visitor usage and the different viewpoints are served by shuttle buses to keep traffic limited. There is a clinic in town which I had the unfortunate opportunity to visit after a severe knee injury caused by a rock jumping up off the ground and hitting me (that's my story, and I'm sticking to it). Through pictures, this is my "West Side Story". This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

12/20-25/2006 Yuma, Arizona
Dec 20, 2006

My parents became "snowbirds" after their retirement first alternating between Bouse and Lake Havasu City, Arizona and Roseburg, Oregon as the weather dictated. They developed a liking for the warmer climates and finally had a home built in the Foothills Area in the eastern part of Yuma. These pictures were taken while visiting there. While there we drive the short distance to Algodones, Mexico for good food at the El Rancherito Restaurant not far from the border and to replenish our small booze supply. Yuma is OK but I would't want to live there because it is not close to the types of areas I enjoy hiking and photography in. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

05/09/2007 Lake Havasu City, Arizona
May 9, 2007

I spent most of my vacations in the 1990's at a condo we bought in Lake Havasu City. My sister liked it down there so much that she and her husband moved there year-round after their retirements. I sold out in 2001 after having seen most of it and the surrounding areas over the time it was there. I still have many good friends there and always like to visit. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

05/14/2007 Quartzsite, Arizona
May 14, 2007

Small town in the late spring, all summer, and early fall this community morphs into a huge RV city in late fall, all winter and early spring and offers several different swap meets which have become famous nationwide. The weather is nice during that time and many people go there to escape the extremes of their home towns in this time period. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

01/15&23/2008 Gila Mountains, Yuma, Arizona
Jan 15, 2008

I have looked at the Gila Mountains which lie east of my parents' home in the Foothills area of Yuma each time we visit there. This time I decided to explore them. They are not nearly as colorful as the ones in Utah but they are interesting in their shades of brown and the sparse vegetation that grows on them. I dedicate this album to Shirley & Paul (ShirleyLitchford). This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

01/20/2008 Burro Canyon in the Kofa Mountains Wilderness Area, Quartzsite, Arizona
Jan 20, 2008

These photos are the product of an afternoon hiking in Burro Canyon. Some of the photos were taken looking nearly into the sun so they are semi-silhouettes. I included them in the album because I thought they may be of interest in showing the mountainous shapes of the area. This album is dedicated to Tammy Osborne (Tjosborne). 09/25/2008 Grand Canyon North Rim from Toroweap Viewpoint, Tuweep, Arizona
Oct 10, 2008

This viewpoint can only be accessed by primitive roads coming from a number of directions. We drove the first part of the 61 miles on a washboarded gravel road, through sand accumulations, along ruts and finally bedrock to get there. Needless to say it is a point rarely visited by the average tourist, most don't even know it exists. Donna McCrimmon and I took the photos in this album so it is a collaborative effort on our part to show you what this remote viewpoint has to offer. This album is dedicated to her as a thanks for the trip there in her Chevy Avalanche. My Honda would not have made it on the final miles of the road. There, high clearance is all-important. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

06/03/2009 Marble Canyon and Lees Ferry
Jun 3, 2009

These photos were taken on a day-trip to and back from Lees Ferry, a historical crossing on the Colorado River established by the Mormon pioneers to link Kanab, Utah with Flagstaff, Arizona. Northern Arizona (north of the Colorado River and Grand Canyon) was settled by the Mormons and widely used for grazing cattle. When the official line was drawn between Utah and Arizona, Utah lost the area as part of the state but it has and still is known as "The Arizona Strip" (a part of Arizona that would more reasonably been in the state of Utah had a more reasonable geographical line been drawn down the Colorado River separating the states. I found it interesting that the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers have placed a monument at Lees Ferry, a number of miles into Arizona. The Navajo Nation in Arizona includes much of the land east of the Colorado River. There is so much to see in this area that I will need to go back for perhaps two more days to see some more of it. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

May 20, 2011

My brother-in-law has enjoyed woodworking for many years. How many pieces he has produced over the years in Oregon and Arizona is hard for me to guess but it has to be in the 200's or more. He places them to some institutions for display, sells some of them in art shows and donates some to organizations for fundraisers. Needless to say the family including me has a number of his pieces. These are some of the many that he has at his home. He has specialized in "intarsia" lately. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

09/07/2011 Train Excursion in Verde Canyon, Clarkville, Arizona
Sep 7, 2011

We decided to ride the Verde Canyon Railroad along the Verde River up the scenic Verde Canyon. Passengers were able to ride on an open car or in a closed passenger car coming and going at will. I spent most of the trip on the open car taking pictures. The track was bumpy and the train didn't stop except to switch the locomotives from one end to the other at Perkinsville for the return trip to Clarkville. Consequently, some parts of the photos in the foreground were blurry and some of the longer shots were blurred because of the bumps (we won't talk about my unsteadiness in holding the camera). All in all it was an enjoyable afternoon riding the rails. The scenery speaks for itself. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

Sep 8, 2011

We spent this day doing a little shopping in downtown Sedona waiting to take a jeep ride. The ride fell way short of our expectations - the weather was poor, the ride too rough for our aging bones and the timing was poor in that we came down the Schnebly Road when it was too dark to enjoy the beautiful scenery. 11/09/2013 Virgin River Gorge from a Different Point of View, Arizona
Nov 9, 2013

I had often wondered whether or not it was possible to look down on the Virgin River Gorge with I-15 winding its way along the river connecting St. George, Utah with Beaver Dam, Arizona. The primitive Black Rock Road proved, in part, to be the route I had been looking for. We also drove a primitive road through the Beaver Dam Mountains Wilderness Area which has deteriorated considerably since I had first driven through a number of years ago. The wilderness area designation must have eliminated most if not all road maintenance activities. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

11/16/2013 Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument, Arizona
Nov 16, 2013

This monument abuts Grand Canyon National Park to the east. It is accessed by driving on wash-boarded gravel roads for 60 miles and then the last 3 miles past the Tuweep Ranger Station is very rough with bedrock outcrops and loose large rocks. I would not consider driving my car on it so we took Beth's trusty old F-150 with 4WD and higher clearance. The truck made the trip a confident drive even though the 4WD was never really needed. I was sore after holding on to the steering wheel jolt after punishing jolt along the road. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

03/29/2014 Upper Antelope Slot Canyon, Page, Arizona
Mar 29, 2014

We had wanted to visit this icon of the Southwest for a number of years so Beth checked into taking a tour. We made no reservations ahead of time. Upon arrival we found that there would be a wait to get a tour when suddenly there was a cancellation and we grabbed it immediately. There were only five of us plus our Navajo driver/guide, Deborah. Instead of having to ride in the back of a truck we comfortably rode in a nice van to the Upper Antelope Canyon entrance. She led an excellent tour and in spite of the many people going into and out of the canyon with different tours we found plenty of time to take photos and learn about the formation of this slot canyon. We enjoyed this well-managed tour very much and will return to visit the Lower Antelope Canyon in the near future. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.
