| | | | | State of Utah! I currently reside in this state and plan to remain here the rest of my life. I am captivated by its beauty, climate and the friendliness of the people. | | - Snow Canyon State Park, Ivins, Utah!
- Snow Canyon State Park is a place of variety. There are red, white and black sandstone formations. Lava blocks and flows from nearby volcanic eruptions are also features in the park. There are hiking trails with differing degrees of difficulty. Other trails allow biking , jogging, and horseback riding. There are rock climbing sites for those who are more adventurous. Being close to the greater St. George area and at a lower elevation than most parks make this a favorite year-round destination for the local population as well as tourists.

| | | - Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, Utah!
- This area spans between Leeds and St. George on the west side of I-15 and offers a great variety of red rock formations in a nearly wilderness setting. It is very close to our home so I have spent much time hiking around in it. The Reserve Headquarters is in St. George, Utah.

Hurricane, Utah! -
Although we are technically part of Hurricane, we are separated from it by a considerable open space, some geographical features and history. I have made a distinction between historical Harrisburg, the community we live in which was founded before Hurricane, and the rest of Hurricane as best I can. It is somewhat arbitrary. I associated the pictures in this album with Hurricane because I believe they are more historically or physically related to Hurricane than the ones in the Harrisburg album. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added. - Album was created 6 years 7 months ago and modified 5 years 7 months ago

Historical Silver Reef, Utah! -
Silver Reef was a town that developed when silver ore was discovered in the only silver-bearing sandstone formation found in the United States. It was a thriving and a typically rowdy mining community primarily between 1877 and 1888. When the price of silver dropped and it was no longer profitable to mine, the town faded into history. The old town has a museum and the Cosmopolitan Restaurant. There are separate Protestant and Catholic Pioneer Cemeteries most of the occupants of which are apparently unknown. There was a Chinese Cemetery until the mining shut down and a wealthy Chinese man from San Francisco had all the remains exumed, placed in tea boxes and transported back to China so they could be buried in the land of their ancestors. There are several new upscale housing developments. Like Harrisburg being a part of Hurricane, Silver Reef is considered a part of Leeds where there is a post office. Silver Reef is the home of a tremendously talented sculptor, Jerry Anderson, who produces a wide variety of bronze statues which are prominently displayed around the local area and elsewhere. He does the most impressive bronze works of art that I have ever seen. February, 2008 - Feb 1, 2008
-
These Photos were taken in February, 2008. The series of 35 photos of the February 24th sunset were of the heaviest sunset I have ever seen. The dark stormy clouds and the small opening to the sun made it interesting to me. I dedicate this album to Kelly McAleer (Kelly Sunshine) for her continuing interest and support. Leeds, Utah! -
This very small historical town, named after Leeds, England has changed little over the years. Now, the changes are starting to occur. New housing is appearing here and there. A new reataurant (The Wagon Wheel) has moved into town from St. George. It serves excellent and reasonably priced food. The largest building in town is the LDS Church and the population of the cemetery may exceed that of the town. There are some original stone houses still here. I have spent many days in the hills east of Leeds looking at and photographing the rocks, plants and animals as I find them. The Gila Monster and Rattlesnake escaped without having their photos taken. Another way of phrasing that is that I escaped before they took me on. Enjoy the photos as I have enjoyed taking them! Washington City adjoins St. George and is historical in its own right. St. George, Utah! -
This album consists of photos taken in the St. George area. Washington County borders Arizona and is in the north end of the Mojave Desert. The climate here is warmer than most of the other areas of Utah. Originally this area was called the "Cotton Mission" when Mormon Pioneers were sent here to grow and mill cotton for self-sufficiency in case the supply from the seceeded southern states was cut off. Mormon southerners who were familiar with growing cotton were assigned here to get it started. The difficulties in growing cotton here led to the demise of the effort when the Civil War ended in 1865. The first Mormon Temple to be completed in Utah was dedicated here in St. George in 1877 and it still stands as a magnificent structure today. Brigham Young liked the climate so well that he made his winter home here. Others followed over the years. In the last 10 years increasing numbers of "Snowbirds" have decided to spend their winters here and either bring their homes on wheels, rent, buy or have homes constructed. The growth in this area is phenomenal. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added. - Album was created 6 years 10 months ago and modified 5 years 4 months ago

Dixie State College of Utah, St. George, Utah! -
The Dixie State College campus has many beautiful and interesting features which have prompted me to insert these photos into their own album. My first association with this school is as an ICL enrollee (Institute for Continuous Learning) where I have been attending a digital photography class. Some of the photos resulted from class assignments and others just because I thought they were interesting. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I have enjoyed taking them. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Temple, St. George, Utah! -
This album is dedicated to Ren & Sue Broomhead and their Families. They have been friends for many years and have always been true to their faith and an inspiration to me. The Temple is architecturally beautiful and no matter what your religious inclinations are, you have to admire it. This was the first temple to be completed in Utah and was dedicated in April, 1877. The grounds are always beautiful and there are always friendly faces to greet you in the visitors' center and answer whatever questions you might have. 06/18/2006 Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah! - Jun 18, 2006
-
Cedar Breaks National Monument is a nearby miniature Bryce Canyon. The erosional formations are every bit as colorful and variable as are those of Bryce Canyon,it is just smaller than Bryce. The high elevation of this area (10,000 ft. +/-)makes hiking more difficult than usual and may be too much if you suffer from respiratory problems. Otherwise, go visit and enjoy it. The Monument can be accessed from both Cedar City and Parowan through Brian Head Resort. The visitors Center is on the Cedar City Side which is the first stop (Coming from the Parowan/Brian Head side it would be the last). The scenery is spectacular and the visit only takes a few hours. 09/28/2006 Kanarra Creek Trail, Kanarraville, Utah! - Sep 28, 2006
-
This area is at Kanarraville just north of the Kolob Canyons section of Zion National Park. The trail follows Kanarra Creek upstream to its slot canyon. I could have gone past a 15' waterfall had I trusted the footing or had someone with me. I chose not to do that. I like hiking alone at my own pace and pausing along the way to take pictures. It was a beautiful day and the creek water was cool on the feet in the many places where it was necessary to wade. Additionally, the fall season was starting to decorate the landscape with yellow, orange and red. This is my time of year! 09/29/2006 Brian Head, Cedar Breaks National Monument and Parowan Canyon, Parowan, Utah! - Sep 29, 2006
-
We took a drive to Brian Head to look at the fall colors. The predominant color there was the yellow of the quaking aspen trees. I never drive up there without looking at some of the Cedar Breaks National Monument scenery. Going back to Parowan we drove on several side roads in the canyon and the colors were terrific as you will see. This was one afternoon of a very beautiful day which we enjoyed thoroughly. 11/02/2006 Vermilion Castle and Yankee Meadow Areas Along the Bowery Creek Road, Parowan, Utah! - Nov 2, 2006
-
I drove up Bowery Creek Road to the Vermilion Castle Trailhead and proceeded to hike up the mountainside. It didn't go where I had hoped and I didn't have enough time to get there and back off-trail. I settled for a number of pictures from that trail as it was and then returned to the car and drove on up the road and took the rest from the road at some power of telephoto on most of them. I drove to Yankee Meadow Reservoir at the end of the road and then returned to the red rock area for a last look before returning home. This was a very productive day! 11/17/2006 Fillmore, The First Territorial Capitol, Utah! - Nov 17, 2006
-
The city of Fillmore is in Millard County, Utah. Brigham Young had a particular respect for President Millard Fillmore so he honored him here in the designated territorial capitol of Utah. When all but local government moved to Salt Lake City, the city was doomed to develop in the same way that the other smaller communities did: slowly. Also, like the others, it has its own history and character. We drove up to visit the area and as usual, I found some things to photograph on this beautiful fall day. 11/18/2006 Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah! - Nov 18, 2006
-
Southern Utah University occupies a fairly large campus that seems to be well-endowed considering it is located in this smaller southern Utah Community. It is beautiful and looks like a progressive institution of higher learning. Given a deadline for the completion of the first university buildings (house it or lose it), Cedar City residents fought through heavy winter storms to make and haul lumber down from the mountains through deep snow for construction. This accomplishment is memorialized with the bronze sculpture by Jerry Anderson. I have taken a number of photos of it from different angles. 02/07/2008 Quail Creek Reservoir, Hurricane, Utah! - Feb 7, 2008
-
When my wife drove by she noticed that the colors around the lake were somewhat different than normal due to cloud conditions and time of day. She called me with the cell phone and told me I should drive down and take a look. Trusting her good judgment I packed up my camera and drove the short half-mile distance and these photos are the result. We had a sunset later that same day and I included those photos also. These photos were the result of my looking for a route up the Virgin River Canyon that I had heard about but not found. Now I have found it and will get back to completely explore the area just outside Hurricane and La Verkin. It also renewed my interest in walking the Historical Hurricane Canal route. Returning home beside Quail Creek Reservoir I stopped and took some photos because of the deep color that the water showed this day. These photos were taken from my deck in the historical community of Harrisburg, Hurricane, Utah. I apologize for posting another album of shots of a developing sunset but I think they are uniquely beautiful and it satisfies my need to take pictures while using a little less gasoline. These are all photos of the beautiful prickly pear cacti in front of the Harrisburg Cemetery lot which have ripened "pears" on them. They are of a variety I have heard called "mules ears" or "cows tongues" because of their elongated pads. The fruit may be picked and processed into great jellies and wines locally by "Brewer and Naylor" who have a closely-guarded undisclosed method of getting rid of the spines. They'd have to kill me if they told me, so they say. I haven't insisted on knowing - yet. 12/20 & 21/2008 Pine Valley Mountains and Harrisburg - Dec 20, 2008
-
What a difference a day makes! The recent weather had made the Pine Valley Mountains invisible for a number of days but on the 20th the sunshine reappeared and patches were visible although fog was a major limiting factor. The next day was a clear day and we could finally see the last week's snow accumulations clearly. The first 12 photos were taken on the 20th from our deck and the next 12 were taken on the 21st from the hillside behind our homes. The last three I took were of our homes and the community building since I was already up on the hillside to photograph the mountains. The snow in our community is virtually gone. 01/29/2009 Hurricane Canal Rim Trail, Hurricane, Utah! - Jan 29, 2009
-
These photos were taken in the Historic Hurricane Canal area, primarily from the Rim Trail. It climbs above the Timpoweap Canyon that the Virgin River carved out of this deep limestone formation. The Virgin River separates the two cities of Hurricane and La Verkin, Utah. Engineers that evaluated the canal route at the turn of the century reported that it couldn't be done. Hurricane city fathers took exception to that finding and decided to proceed anyway. The route was across steep sidehills and there were areas near the city that were overhung with loose lava blocks. The city fathers were right - it could be built. The canal was kept open for about 80 years by Mormon ingenuity and industry. This album is related to another album of mine which is a short trip part way up the bottom of the canyon: http://public.fotki.com/jwb592002/state_of_utah/03082008-hurricane-utah/ . Photo # 57 is mine which is an up-to-date shot of a December, 2006 accident scene. The last two, # 58 & #59, were borrowed from the Snopes site to show two shots of the accident and the potential for serious consequences. These pictures have made the E-mail forwarding circuit some being labeled as occurring near Flagstaff, Arizona and other places. It definitely happened here! These photos were taken from our deck in the historical community of Harrisburg, Hurricane, Utah. I cannot resist taking pictures of this small range of mountains because of their changing appearance after each snowstorm. 03/08&24/2009 Quail Creek Reservoir, Hurricane, Utah! - Mar 8, 2009

The first series of photos was taken in the earlier afternoon and the second series was taken on a return trip by the lake in the later afternoon. The third series was taken approximately two weeks later from the opposite side of the reservoir. This is one of the water reservoirs for Hurricane, Utah and is within a quarter of a mile of our home in the historical community of Harrisburg. These photos were taken near the Quail Creek Ranch Road, Hurricane, Utah which we explored for the first time on a short afternoon and found some amazing things including Native American petroglyphs. We returned there March 24 to give it a more extensive look. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added. - Album was created 4 years 3 months ago and modified 4 years 3 months ago

03/09/2009 Harrisburg, Hurricane, Utah! - Mar 9, 2009
-
These photos were all taken in one day, March 9, 2009 from our deck in the community of Harrisburg, Hurricane, Utah. The first series was just after sunrise. We are in the shadow of a mountain so the only indications of sunrise colors we get are on the hills and clouds above that are west of us. The second series was taken just before sundown from our deck. There were so many clouds that the sunset was not extremely widespread nor extremely colorful but I thought it was worth recording. After 2 days and 5 interviews (and of course a drug test and background check and multiple reference checks) I have returned to the working world as an Associate in the Garden Center at the brand new local Wal-Mart Super Store in Hurricane, Utah. I am now qualified to wield a box cutter as we maintain stocked shelves and I help customers find things that I am still trying to find myself. - Album was created 4 years 3 months ago and modified 4 years 3 months ago

04/21/2009 Capitol Reef National Park, Utah! - Apr 21, 2009
-
These photos were taken during a short stop at Capitol Reef National Park on the way to Hanksville, Utah where we would visit Goblin Valley State Park just north and west of there off of SR-24. It had been a long trip via the route we took so we enjoyed stopping and taking a photo break. This national park goes on our "return with more time to take a closer look" list since we have only visited bits and pieces of it on several occasions before. Like all other Utah National Parks it is a beautifully fascinating place! 04/22/2009 Hanksville. Utah! - Apr 22, 2009
-
We drove to Hanksville, Utah and stayed at a small motel named "Henry's Hideout". Not having even seen it before, we made advanced reservations with trepidation. It turned out to be OK. The only grocery store was across the highway and it served as the motel office. There were three places to eat in town and we found the food at "Blondie's to be the best. We stayed two nights using the day in between to explore Goblin Valley and some of the area around Hanksville. We could easily have used a few more days taking photos of this beautiful area. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added. - Album was created 4 years 2 months ago and modified 4 years 2 months ago

04/22&23/2009 Goblin Valley State Park, Utah - Apr 22, 2009

This was an interesting place to see that I had always managed to miss because it is somewhat off the beaten track between the national parks which I love to visit. The erosion formations are unique and numerous. The rest of the trip has been covered by the Capitol Reef National Park album and the Hanksville album. 06/15/2009 Quail Creek Ranch Road, Hurricane, Utah! - Jun 15, 2009
-
These photos were taken on the ridge between the Quail Creek Reservoir and the Quail Creek Ranch Road in Hurricane, Utah. Please excuse two things about the album: I didn't realize I had the wrong ISO setting on the camera and I took many photos of a co-operative Mojave Black-Collared Lizard which I included. This lizard was very interesting - of course I didn't get its jumping straight up in the air to capture a flying insect nor did I get it launching itself into a bush and then onto another rock. What a surprise those acrobatics were! This album has been completed and no more photos will be added. - Album was created 4 years ago and modified 4 years ago

06/23/2009 Kolob Reservoir Route to Cedar City, Utah! - Jun 23, 2009
-
We decided that we would make this familiar trip from Virgin to Cedar City, Utah in the high country since the snow was gone and the roads had dried out. It was a beautiful day and the wildflowers were out in force! This is a varied landscape from seemingly endless lush fields to very brushy land to lava block flows on entire hillsides to quaking aspen forests. 06/30/2009 Browse Guard Station Area, Leeds, Utah! - Jun 30, 2009
-
Friends had told me about the old abandoned Browse Guard Station. It is aptly off the Browse Exit from I-15 and one travels in an easterly direction on a gravel road which turns into a dirt one-track poorly-maintained 4WD road after a few miles. The first few photos of wildflowers were taken from the point of transition from good to bad road. I use my trusty old low-clearance 1997 Honda accord EX with 190,000+ miles to explore these back roads as far as I can and we made the seemingly long trip on into the guard station. This old building has been abandoned and there is a sign on the door which warns of the possibility of a rat-borne fatal disease named "hantavirus" being on the premises. We explored the surrounding area and the biggest surprise was the large and healthy growing Sequoia tree which had to have been planted there and is native to the high Sierra Mountains in California but a widely-planted ornamental conifer tree. It is doing very well in this environment similar to the Sierras being in the east-side foothills of the Pine Valley Mountains. 07/06/2009 Leeds, Utah - Jul 6, 2009
-
This small town has undertaken some beautification projects and historical interpretive monumentation along with restoration of some of its old buildings. Some residents are opposed to these projects because of the costs involved but I think in the long run they will benefit with more visitation. The town has one grocery store (the Leeds Market), one restaurant - a good one (the Wagon Wheel Diner) several businesses and no gas station so growth is inevitable being within 20 miles of St. George. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added. - Album was created 3 years 11 months ago and modified 3 years 11 months ago

07/08/2009 Pine Valley, Pinto and New Harmony, Utah - Jul 8, 2009
-
We drove to the Pine Valley Reservoir and then returned home on back roads via Grass Valley, the historical town of Pinto and New Harmony, Utah. It was a fine day to explore an area new to us and very close also. Some of the roads left a lot to be desired but it was drivable at very slow speeds weaving to avoid scraping and high-centering on large rocks. 07/09/2009 New Harmony, Pinto, New Castle & Veyo, Utah - Jul 9, 2009
-
We re-traced our previous day's travels back to New Harmony and Pinto and then headed to New Castle and on through Enterprise to Veyo. We stopped at the original Marv's which makes the best hamburgers, fries and milkshakes in the world. It is truly the place where you have trouble opening your mouth wide enough to eat a double bacon cheeseburger with all the goodies on it but a feat I managed to accomplish with delighted effort. Marv has opened up a satellite diner in St. George but the original is still the best! For some reason I did not take a photo of this small landmark (too full to bend over to get the camera out of the back seat). We drove by the Mountain Meadows Massacre site but didn't stop because we had visited before. 10/18/2009 Temple Quarry Trail, Saint George, Utah - Oct 18, 2009
-
These photos were taken from the Temple Quarry Trail / Wagon Road which passes along a hillside across from the airport (soon to be replaced by a new modern facility). While there I was fortunate enough to watch and photograph two military jets taking off. The trail leads to the quarry which was the source of the volcanic basalt which after shaping to specific sizes was hauled by wagon down to the LDS Temple construction site in Saint George. The stones were placed as a foundation for the temple building. 11/08/2009 Anasazi Valley Trail, Santa Clara, Utah - Nov 8, 2009

This is a trail that is know for its Native American petroglyphs. We spent hours walking around the rocks looking at and photographing them. Many are in a state of advanced erosion and I'm sure that many have disappeared entirely by now. Some look like they were done recently and they may have. Additionally, the hike was made more enjoyable by the fall colors beside the Santa Clara River below.
