Snow Canyon is located north of St. George near the small but rapidly growing community of Ivins, Utah. The canyon and surrounding ridges show the results of volcanic eruptions on top of the sandstone underlayment from scattered rocks to great depths of lava. When exposed, the sandstone erodes out from under the lava, undermining it and allowing individual lava rocks to roll down to the bases of the sandstone slopes. There are basically two different colors of sandstone which gives another dimension of color to the area. The varied greens of the plants and their multi-colored flowers now in bloom is an extra bonus. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

I parked in the Paradise Canyon Housing Development at a place where signs indicated that non-residents' cars would be towed and went ahead and hiked up the trail. I soon realized that there was another way in with a public parking lot. I uneasily took in a few photos before returning quickly to the car. I met a "resident" on the trail back and he indicated that the signs were there to be able to remove vehicles that over-extended their welcome and we were safe from towing. Being already nearly back to the car he told me about a petroglyph site on the Arizona Strip, a short drive from here so I drove there and the rest of the day was spent at the BLM Little Black Mountain Petroglyph Site South of St. George in Arizona (see that album). I will spend more time here in Paradise Canyon on a future date. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

I chose a cloudy day to hike into this part of the park because of the glare of the sun on these white rocks when the weather is clear. As you can tell, the sun did come out in the late afternoon to add a little color. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

Tnis is a rather easy trail to hike and the rewards are many. I passed by the arch and didn't even see it because of the angle of the light on the way to the end of the trail. On the way back the sunlight revealed the arch. It is a very massive arch supposedly one of the largest in Utah. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

This trail is now accessed from the Gap Trailhead off the highest street in the Castle Rock Housing Development, Saint George, Utah. There are great views of the city on the first part of the hike and sandstone rock formations further along. This album has been completed and no more photos will be added.

These photos were taken in the East Area of Snow Canyon State Park, St. George, Utah. The day was not perfect weatherwise and the terrain was somewhat confusing with falls in the main wash and side canyons but it was a productive day anyway. The pictured slot canyon was very narrow. I went as far in as I could but finally quit when it narrowed to the point that I couldn't go further. There were some petroglyphs in there but not enough room to photograph them.
