Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Shows and Model Contests

In 2007 and 2008, the KC Slammers staged the model car contest portion of this great classic rod and custom car show in Wichita, Kansas, for Starbird Enterprises. In 2009, the Starbirds elected to not have a model contest for that year due to space restrictions incurred by sharing the Convention Center with the Wichita New Car Dealers Association. Here are pics of the real cars AND, of course, the Slammers and the model entries as well.

Starbird Wichita Show and Slammers Trip 2011
Jan 15, 2011

6 Slammers (Rich, Zimm, Ellis, Allen, Drew, and Jerrald) took a road trip to Wichita on a cold winter day to the Darryl Starbird Rod and Custom Show. Actually, Zimm, Allen, Rich, and Ellis went down the night before and crashed at the local Holiday Inn Downtown in order to attend a special early Saturday morning KKOA breakfast at the Beacon Restaurant - a local landmark in the downtown area.

It was a great show. It seemed a little smaller this year but the quality of the car entries was above average. Other than Darryl himself, there were no big name customizers there to meet and greet.

The Slammers and the KKOA Officials had a special treat after the breakfast. We all caravanned over to Gary Meyers' house and visited Elden Titus' Vibrasonic Roadster being completed right there in Gary's garage. After we finished there, we had an exclusive tour of Tom Hanna's Metal Fabricating Shop/Factory and were privileged to get inside the workshop and see all of the projects underway and get a first-hand view of the Hanna operation.

We then attended the KKOA Winter Meeting at the Century II Convention Center and then spent a good part of the afternoon touring the Starbird Show. When we left there, we went over to Automobilia in downtown Wichita, visited with Gary Carpenter, the owner, and bought some neat model kits.

The day was topped of with our traditional visit to the downtown Spangles Restaurant for burgers, fries, and ice cream mudslides.

It just don't get any better than that for a way to spend a winter day with your buddies!

Starbird Rod & Custom - Tulsa 2014
Feb 15, 2014

It was back to Tulsa for Zimm and Ellis. We left KC at 8 AM in 31 degree weather with snow on the ground and when we opened the car doors in Tulsa around noon it was 67 degrees and no snow! Gotta luv that Oklahoma winter!
This was the 50th Anniversary for the Starbird Show in Tulsa and the theme was "The Year of the Bubbletops". Darryl pulled out all the stops and guest celebrities included Bill Hines, Chuck Miller, George Barris, Candy Clark, Dennis Gage, Darryl Starbird, and almost all of the members of the National Rod & Custom Hall of Fame and Museum.
It was held in the huge EXPO Center on the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. The Expo Center is purported to be the largest single span building in the world. It was jammed with cars, celebrities, vendors of all types, pinstripers, artists, and beautiful girls. It's a 3-day extravaganza held every year around mid-February. If you love car shows, this is one you HAVE to put on your bucket list if you've never been to it.

2009 Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Show
Jan 17, 2009

The 2009 Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Show didn't have a model car contest this year. According to Donna Starbird this decision was made due to space limitations as the event organizers shared a large part of the convention center space with the Wichita Area New Car Dealers. We Slammers certainly hope that we are invited again in 2010 to restart the model contest for the Starbird Family. In the meantime, Rich and Ellis went down on Saturday and took a bunch of pictures at the show for all to enjoy.

2008 Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Show and Model Contest
Jan 18, 2008

On January 18, 19, and 20, 2008, the 51st Annual Darryl Starbird Rod and Custom Show was held in Wichita, Kansas. The KC Slammers, for the second year in a row, were privileged to be invited by the Starbirds to organize and run the model car contest in conjunction with that event.
The January weather in South-Central Kansas was cold (in the 10's and 20's) but the Century II Convention Center was warm, full of fantastic cars (full-size and smaller scale), great people, and lots of neat things to do and see. The Texas Bikini Squad was there again this year and the crowd was entertained by the "Globe of Death" Motorcycle Stunt Show.
Darryl Starbird proved once again that he can still customize with the best of them as he used the event to premiere his newest creation "The Duseybird". Of course, he brought along some other great customs from his National Rod and Custom Hall of Fame and Museum in Afton, Oklahoma as well.
Elden Titus brought in his classic "Voodoo Spyder" - the custom car that brought him to the forefront of the custom car world and recognized as one of the top customizers in the nation!
The Slammers' great friends from the Kustom Kemps of America were there with President Jerry Titus and all of the office staff and officers representing this great organization. The KKOA has as its sole purpose to promote and preserve custom cars, leadsleds, and traditional rods. (The Slammers present the KKOA's Annual Model Kemp Spectacular on the last weekend in July each year in Salina, Kansas. See our photo album of that event here on this FOTKI site as well.)
So... hit that slideshow button and sit back, grab a drink of your choice, a bag of something to munch on, and enjoy the photos.
