Imagine, if you will, that it’s Aug 25th, 1957. You and a few of your fellow hot rod hoodlums (gearheads in today’s terms) are standing in the pits of a small, very much nondescript drag strip out out in the middle of nowhere. As you look around you see nothing but cornfields in the distance. But in closer view is an absolute beautiful panorama of “A” bones, “T”s, Willys and Henry J coupes, front engined purpose built dragsters, and even some of those resemble relics from the late 40’s early 50’s. As you and your buddies from the K.C. Slammers Model Car Club, wander through the pits looking for reference material for that next great model build, there is a scurry of activity, and you are constantly being bombarded by the sounds of hopped up, 4 bangers, inline 6’s, lots of flathead V-8, compliments of our dear friend H.F. who blessed us with those starting in 1932, as well as an occasional “bowtie”, “ Hemi”, Olds, or Buick, model of the V-8 being brought to life in preparation for it’s ensuing battle against the clocks and the opponent in the other lane of this narrow two lane strip of concrete and blacktop. As you continue to look around in total awe your head starts to clear and you begin to fully realize that it’s not 1957, but 2007, and yes, you are standing in the situation previously described. It’s a hot August Saturday night and you just happen to be wandering the pits of MOKAN dragstrip. This strip was founded in 1962,and is located between Ausbury, MO. and Pittsburg, KS, on Missouri Highway 171. It has been in continuous operation ever since and is also the home of the H.A.M.B. drags. You are about to experience photos of the 6th running of the vintage drags, which are sponsored by the H.A.M.B. forum members, and the Jalopy Journal website ( www.jalopyjournal.com ). This forum is dedicated to “Spreading the gospel of traditional hot rods and kustoms to hoodlums worldwide.” So sit back, relax, and take a trip down memory lane with us. Many thanks to the Jalopy Journal website and the H.A.M.B. forum members for making this trip possible. CHEERS !!!! And see you again in ’08. out in the middle of nowhere. Here we are, folks! Pictures of the H.A.M.B.-sponsored Old Time Drags held every year in Asbury, Missouri. Several KC Slammers took a road trip down that way on a warm August 23rd Saturday and spent the afternoon checkin' out the cars and watchin' the drags. On the way home we stopped in Pittsburg, KS, at Chicken Annie's for some pan-fried chicken. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday, huh?
Enjoy the pictures - We hope they provide plenty of model building inspiration and ideas! the afternoon checkin' out the cars and watchin' the drags. On the way home we stopped in Pittsburg, KS, at Chicken Annie's for some pan-fried chicken. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday, huh?

I almost missed this show! By the time this webmaster got there, a lot of the cars had already left. But... here's 51 neat pix of the cars that I COULD get pictures of. It was held on the banks of the Missouri River in a neat little public riverside park just south of Liberty, Missouri. A beautiful Autumn day with temps right around 80 degrees! Hope to catch it next year. This was the first year for this show and it had over 100 entries! the Missouri River in a neat little public riverside park just south of Liberty, Missouri. Rich Newberry, a member of the KC Slammers, made the trip down to Darryl Starbird's National Custom and Hot Rod Hall of Fame and Museum. He had the opportunity to attend the annual Hall of Fame Induction, car show, and spent a lot of time at the museum. He also got to go to the cookout at the Starbird Home on the grounds. Lots of big names in the customizing world were there! Our friend, Jerry Titus, received the LIfetime Achievement Award for his contributions on perpetuating rods and customs through the KKOA. Jerry is the president of the Kustom Kemps of America.

A great show this year!
Plenty of rods, customs, classics, trucks, and bikes.
Gene Winfield was there pressin' flesh and being the gentleman that he always is! Fritz had his Outlaw Clone and a great bike set up in a special Big Daddy Roth Tribute Exhibit. The new T-Bird Custom "The Thunderflite" came in from California. Jimmy Flintstone was there with his crew sellin' those great resin goodies of his and lots of other stuff as well.
KC woke up Saturday the 28th to a 7" snowfall that came overnight but it didn't seem to hold off the car fans any at all. great bike set up in a special Big Daddy Roth Tribute Exhibit.
