Leadsled 2010 - Jul 24, 2010
-
The 2010 KKOA Leadsled was a roaring success. The final 1:1 car count was in excess of 2,000 registered vehicles and the new location in Oakdale Park was fantastic.
It was the 30th year for the Leadsled and they sure did it right! Thursday was set-up, a hot dogs and beans cookout at Bright Automotive west of Salina that evening, and back to the Best Western Motel (KKOA Headquarters) that night for a cruise night at the motel while everyone sat out in the parking lot and enjoyed their favorite beverage.
Friday morning found the July Kansas Heat setting in but the Kool Guys and Gals were out at the park ready for a great day of rods and customs. The temperature hit 100 degrees but the new park was spacious and we had a good breeze - a hot one - but a good one!
On Friday afternoon, everyone went out to the old airstrip on the east side of Salina for 4 hours of "Run Whatcha Brung" Drag Races. It was loud and proud!
Friday night found Calvin Customs (downtown Salina) hosting a free BBQ, Beer, and Beans (the BIG Three) feed. Great cars and more great times with old and new friends.
Starting at 9:30 and lasting until after midnight, the KKOA held its annual "Tonight Show" awards program over at the Motel. Imagine sitting in the same room as Darryl Starbird, Gene Winfield, George Barris, John D'Agostino, Linda Vaughn, Chuck Miller, and numerous other customizers just sittin' around eating snacks and enjoying the show.
Saturday, in addition to the Leadsled activities, was the Elden Titus Model Kemp Spectacular. The model count was down a bit this year but the ones that were entered were really sharp with excellent workmanship. Slammers helping out with the model show in 2010 were Steve Barnes, Allen Smerchek, Alyn Loya, David Johnson, Cary Marks, Larry Todd, Diane Todd, Seth Goeke, Rich Newberry, Lee Bush, Jerrald Braiuca, and Ellis Kendrick.
Celebrities and Customizers at the Leadsled this year were Gene Winfield, Darryl Starbird, Linda Vaughn (Miss Hurst Golden Shifter), Paul (American Grafitti) LeMat, George Barris, John D'Agostino (fresh from recovering from a heart attack), Voodoo Larry, Fritz Schenck, Mark Moriarity, and Chuck Miller. Bill Hines didn't make it this year as he was recovering from a bout with pneumonia.
On Saturday night, the KKOA staged a huge Golden Oldies concert and dance over at the Bicentennial Center near the park with the Tokens, Jimmy Clanton, and several other recording stars from the early days of rock and roll. It was kind of pricey for a ticket so many didn't go but a lot of the folks did!
KKOA again kicked up $500 in cash prizes for the model contest. That's unbelievable!
Sunday morning at the Leadsled is real laid back with an old-time gospel church service on the event site, more visiting, some clean-up and put-away, and then the KKOA Awards starting at 1 PM.
The heat and the humidity this year was unbelievable, but it didn't stop anyone from having a great time. The new site at Oakdale Park presented its challenges but its advantages outweighed them. Well, another year of great times to come and set your calendars now for the "last full weekend in July" for 2011 and the 31st Annual KKOA Leadsled Spectacular.

KKOA 2009 Salina Kansas Leadsled and Model Contest - Jul 24, 2009
-
On July 24, 25, and 26, the Kustom Kemps of America staged their 29th Annual Leadsled Spectacular in Salina, Kansas. It was the biggest ever, setting a new record for 1:1 entries of 1,025 great customs and rods. More vendors and pinstripers than ever and, of course, many of the customizing legends and greats were there in force. George Barris, Darryl Starbird, Bill Hines, Chuck Miller, Brad Masterson, Fritz Schenck, Mark Moriarity, and Bo Huff just to name a few!
The weather varied between hot and cool but it rained a bit and it was always muggy and humid! Hey, it's central Kansas in July! Whadya' expect???
The Hollywood star this year was Joyce DeWitt ("Janet") from the Three's Company television situation comedy. What a treat she was and she's just as bubbly and upbeat as the characters she plays on TV!
Rockabilly legend Charlie Gracie performed. Charlie played and hung with Richie Valens, Chuck Berry, and all the other greats "back in the day"! A dead-on Johnny Cash impersonator rounded out the musical side of the live entertainment. There was a great DJ there and he kept the air full of oldies and goldies.
The KC Slammers were again proud to stage the model car contest for the KKOA. A great opportunity to showcase the art of model-car building for all to enjoy!
If you've never been to this event, you just have to make it NEXT year "fer shure" because the last weekend of July in 2010 will be the 30th Anniversary for the Leadsled Spectacular. It promises to be the biggest and best ever! See ya' there! - Album was created 3 years 10 months ago and modified 9 months ago
