KKOA 2009 Salina Kansas Leadsled and Model Contest
On July 24, 25, and 26, the Kustom Kemps of America staged their 29th Annual Leadsled Spectacular in Salina, Kansas. It was the biggest ever, setting a new record for 1:1 entries of 1,025 great customs and rods. More vendors and pinstripers than ever and, of course, many of the customizing legends and greats were there in force. George Barris, Darryl Starbird, Bill Hines, Chuck Miller, Brad Masterson, Fritz Schenck, Mark Moriarity, and Bo Huff just to name a few!
The weather varied between hot and cool but it rained a bit and it was always muggy and humid! Hey, it's central Kansas in July! Whadya' expect???
The Hollywood star this year was Joyce DeWitt ("Janet") from the Three's Company television situation comedy. What a treat she was and she's just as bubbly and upbeat as the characters she plays on TV!
Rockabilly legend Charlie Gracie performed. Charlie played and hung with Richie Valens, Chuck Berry, and all the other greats "back in the day"! A dead-on Johnny Cash impersonator rounded out the musical side of the live entertainment. There was a great DJ there and he kept the air full of oldies and goldies.
The KC Slammers were again proud to stage the model car contest for the KKOA. A great opportunity to showcase the art of model-car building for all to enjoy!
If you've never been to this event, you just have to make it NEXT year "fer shure" because the last weekend of July in 2010 will be the 30th Anniversary for the Leadsled Spectacular. It promises to be the biggest and best ever! See ya' there!
