A photo album of the life and resurrection of the American Metal Products car, (or AMP CAR), built and submitted to Kaiser-Frazer in 1948, which resulted in the design and production of Kaiser's "Henry J" model. Update, October 22, 2005: Final painting has begun...go to last page! Update, Nov. 14, 2005 = All of the panels are painted, albeit with some really bad runs on the fenders and doors, likely due to inadequate lighting and zealous carelessness on the part of the AMPster "director." Further sanding is being done on the two rear fenders, the worst panels, and they are almost ready to be reprimed and painted again. VALUABLE LESSON: Don't try to paint more than about two panels at a time - (but have another one prepped and ready to paint in case I have too much paint left in the gun - this stuff has a short "pot life!" tjw.....CHATROOM FOR THIS PROJECT IS: - -- (Because of an insideous recurring spam advertisement, the chatroom for this site has been changed to ; http://www.theautochannel...ere%21&frame=frameset ).. - June 2, 2006, Except for interior wall and door upholstery and headliner, and some horn switch troubleshooting and a few other minor details, the AMP car is done today. Further work will have to be done at a later time, as time, parts, and finances become available. It has been seven long years, and many other projects await my attention. AIR DISC GRINDING UNDERCOATING RESIDUE FROM RIGHT REAR WHEEL WELL
One taken today, (January 18, 2002) about 11:00 a.m. Spent nearly two hours this morning, mostly scraping the RR wheel well outside with the various tools, and have finally graduated to some disc sanding with the pneumatic unit, which is very fast, but unfortunately runs down the pressure on my air compressor pretty fast. I have sent my old, backup compressor out for repair (Willis Hardware, Willis, MI), so this will go better when I get that back. It is pretty hard to run them down when both units are working together. Of course the sound in the garage is deafening! You can imagine how difficult it would be to do the portion of the right "B" post that is INSIDE the fender when the body is in this position, but that should not be a problem when the body is upright again............We just did some tests of GAS TANK ETCH versus some PURE MURIATIC ACID, and frankly, I did not think that either one did much with the rust on two test sections of the floor. My chems are kinda old though. Does anyone know what the shelf life of muriatic acid is in a plastic bottle? I think they have it at the local home depot. This stuff is at least two years old, and possibly seven! E-mail me if you know anything about muriatic acid used as a rust remover, please. E-mail: kfnut@umich.edu. Thanks for tuning in to the AMP Car Project! Your comments and E-mails are welcome!! Tom Wilson======footnote, 1-19-2002, 12:20 a.m. Home Depot no longer carries muriatic acid, but I was able to pick up a gallon of it at the nearby Lowe's warehouse for only $3.69!! They have a good supply of the lo-#-grit ( 16 )sanding discs with the large hole in the center for the air sander, three for $5.00 - better than the $2.00 each at HDepot! Haven't tried the muriatic yet though!
