Update, October 22, 2005: Final painting has begun...go to last page! Update, Nov. 14, 2005 = All of the panels are painted, albeit with some really bad runs on the fenders and doors, likely due to inadequate lighting and zealous carelessness on the part of the AMPster "director." Further sanding is being done on the two rear fenders, the worst panels, and they are almost ready to be reprimed and painted again. VALUABLE LESSON: Don't try to paint more than about two panels at a time - (but have another one prepped and ready to paint in case I have too much paint left in the gun - this stuff has a short "pot life!" tjw.....CHATROOM FOR THIS PROJECT IS: - -- (Because of an insideous recurring spam advertisement, the chatroom for this site has been changed to ; http://www.theautochannel...ere%21&frame=frameset ).. - June 2, 2006, Except for interior wall and door upholstery and headliner, and some horn switch troubleshooting and a few other minor details, the AMP car is done today.     dear tom, have you tried using a guide coat. usually contrasting light coat of primer. it can help find the high and low spots.

    dear tom, have you ever considered using a "d-a" sander. they are smaller, lighter and might be easier with light gauge metal.

    Yes, been using that technique for some time. Learned that in a community college class

    dear tom, a possibility might be some type of aftermarket or replacement back up lights. you might have to change the sockets for directionals if you have them now or plan to install them.

    ORIGINAL MASTER CYLINDER INSTALLED

    dear tom, the most common number for that type of installation in Napa United and Wagner was #2796. this was used on studerbakers, jeeps and other models, especially wagner factory equipped vihicles. you might want to find a Napa store that has been around a long time or has a very experienced counterman. he probably would be able to figure out much of this. another place t try is Jim O'Clair at Hemmings motor news.

    AMP CAR ORIGINAL FUEL PUMP AND IDENTICAL CASTING OF MASTER CYLINDER

    dear tom, again find a counterman who has been around a long time. he should have an illustrated buyers guide for brake parts. these usually cover hydraulic cylinders, hoses, some switches, wheel studs and nuts as well as brake shoes and pads. sometimes springs and hardware are covered. rotors and drums are not usually covered in these catalogs. they have been out of print for some time. usually wagner was the most helpful.

    dear tom, ac used to have an interchange in the back of their fuel pump catalog from pump flange number to replacement pump number and a chart in the older catalogs from flange # to repaip kit number. you might even find a rebuilt pump by interchange #. the other pump might be the same as the original except the rocker arm may be different or a fitting could be different. again look for the oldest guy behind the counter as he will probably the only one familiar with any kind of mechanical fuel pump

    dear tom, look for a similar carburetor from a dodge six from the 40's. the rest of the mopars usally used carters. not sure about dodge trucks of that era.

    CLEANING UP THE DISTRIBUTER AND VACUUM ADVANCE

    dear tom, while you are at the Napa store, they should have an echlin ignition unit parts guide as well. if you bring them the number off the housing they should be able to get parts for your distributor, starter and generator, even being able to come up with a part number for a new voltage regulator , if you shold need one. wires should not be a problem, as universal 4 cylinder kits should still be available.

    SCANNER  LAYOUT OF AMP CARBURETOR FLOAT GASKET AND ACCELERATOR PUMP

    dear tom, it appears that you have a "BXV" or "BXOV" carburetor. yours might be an industrual application. Dodge used a similar carburetor in the 40's probably toward the 42-48 era. the number you found probably is the carb #. it is in the correct location. i had a stomberg on my 67 fury 318 and the number was 19-273, so that series of numbers is a reasonable possibility. find a carburetor shop that has been around a long time and does all sorts of carburetors. strombergs were used on buicks up to about 1961 as well as old gmc trucks. someone who works on them and is familiar with them will know where to get parts. also find a NAPA store that has been around a long time, especially one that has handled their echlin fuel system parts long enough to still have a unit parts guide. it's an old paper catalog with listings by carb# not vehicle application. they usually list the repair kit, float and possibly a choke thermostat or needle and seat. you will want to look for the oldest guy there, as he will probably be the only one who will know what you are talking about. good luck! p.s. you could try fred kanter in boonton, n.j. if you have no luck elsewhere.
