The dry Hydrocal shell popped right out, which allowed me to remove the newspaper.  Not a necessary step, but the newspaper served no purpose after the shell was hard.

The shell was stuck back in the box and the "carving" layer of Patching Plaster was heavily applied.  All the edges were sealed with plaster to hold the shell secure in the box.
