Broadback is a high-volume river in Northern Quebec. Our team of 10 paddled the lower section from Broadback bridge to James Bay - a distance of 120 km - over 6 days in late July. We used self-bailing raft, 4 infatable and one hard-shell kayaks. I always wanted to do a serious river in hard-shell, and this time my group (thans to everyone!) allowed me the opportunity.
This photo album was compiled from frames shot by 5 digital cameras we had with us. ---
Broadback offers nearly everything one could ask from a 1-week trip: complete wilderness and solitude( less than 5 groups travel this river each year, so there are almost no portage trails in existance, except 2 - around falls, and even these are not easy to find), great white water with numerous rapids of class 3 to 5, good fishing, lots of berries, wild life viewing ( mooses, bears, beavers, etc.) and spectacular 32-metre-high waterfall. This is a big river ( well over 200 m3 per second), so rapids were difficult, and we had quite a few dumps and swims. Fortunately, most rapids on Broadback are ended with stretches of quiet water, and swimming there is usually not that dangerous as on some over rivers I've seen. Still, this river has to be taken very seriously: one swim in our group was about 3 km long and we were lucky it did not result in injury or worse. I'll add maps, technical stuff and comments later. Enjoy!
