| | | | | 3 - Places - Australia I am documenting my holiday trips by location to give a small insight into this great & diverse country. I do include photos from friends to help fill out the picture. I also tag most photos so that there is a chance to link up with other members photos to give an even more detailed picture. I also geocode so check "My FotkiMap". | | - Broken Hill Trip (NSW)
- This is the first time my wife and I have been to Broken Hill. Although passing through a lot of arid country it was much more interesting than expected, as was Broken Hill itself.
Broken Hill is 511km from Adelaide and 1116km from Sydney. It is a gateway to the Outback. One of the biggest companies in the world started in Broken Hill.
- albums: 8
| | | - Canberra Trip (ACT)
- A trip to our national capital and back - round trip 2,600km. We stayed at Hay (NSW) on the way over and Swan Hill (Vic) on the way home. Meeting with friends was a major part of the trip.
I dont know how we are doing it but managing to get plenty of dull and overcast days on our holidays.
- albums: 12
| | | - Echuca (Vic) Trip
- To Echuca via Berri, Mildura and Swan Hill. Returned to Adelaide via Tongala, Bendigo, Ballarat, Grampians, Horsham and Tailem Bend. The round trip was around 1600km. Done in Jan and it was hot.
- albums: 6
| | | - Kangaroo Island (SA) Trip
- Our first trip to the Island. It is just 120km south of Adelaide. It land area is approximately 4,500 sq km with a population of 4,500.
It is a beautiful island and a 4 day trip really only scratched the surface. Weather unfortunately quite variable. First day 43C and a bit hot for everyone (including seals). Second day much cooler (thankfully) but very overcast. The island is still recovering from last years huge bushfires.
- albums: 13
| | | - Melbourne (Vic) Trip
- A flying visit to Melbourne for 2 days. We went via the Great Ocean Road and came back via a more northerly route through Hamilton (just south of The Grampians). Travelling time was 2 days each way and in total around 2000km.
- albums: 5
| | | - Port Campbell (Vic) - Great Ocean Road
- Trip of around 1400km. Adelaide - Beachport - Mt Gambier - Port Fairy - Port Cambell - Beech Forest - Otway National Park - Apollo Bay - Colac - Camperdown - Penola - Adelaide. Weather in the main fine but some cloudy and rainy moments at inconvenient times.
- albums: 11
| | | - Port Lincoln (SA) Trip
- A week long excursion to the West Coast of South Australia - main towns visited Port Lincoln, Coffin Bay and Elliston. Port Lincoln about 220km west of Adelaide but 646 by road or 300km utilising ferry between Wallaroo and Cowell. Ferry journey takes about 2 hours.
Probably one of the wettest, windiest and coldest holidays we have had. Although we managed to stay fairly dry the conditions were not the best for photography. I got a few unnoticed droplets of rain on the lens - strange problem.
Lots of wild seas and crumbly cliffs - you do have to be careful especially when the wind is nearly taking you off your feet.
- albums: 8
| | | - Robe & Hamilton (Vic) Trip in Oct
- A week trip to Robe in SE of SA and then Hamilton in Victoria (just south of the Grampians). We travelled around 1300km and almost unbelievably much of the time was overcast weather. However we should be grateful because it looks like the drought may be breaking but there is still a long way to go.
- albums: 9
| | | - Sydney Trip (NSW)
- This year a trip to Sydney for the annual break. My wife has only ever just passed through the airport so completely new for her.
We drove and took 6 days in total so the drive was relatively leisurely. Overall we drove around 3,600km. On the way to Sydney we went via Hay, Cowra and Katoomba. On the way home we went via Bowra, Wagga Wagga, Jerilderie, Deneliquin and Swan Hill. The Japanese Garden at Cowra was magnificient.
We meet some great and very friendly people on the journey. We also meet a wonderful Lebanese family in Sydney so friendly and welcoming - one of the highlights of the holiday.
I keep promising myself I will be much more systematic about my photographs & the journey however like normal they are a bit patchy. Perhaps it was the temperature. It was quite warm - most of the time late 30s early 40s.
- albums: 7
| | | - Victor Harbor (SA) Trip
- A short break down to Victor Harbor (about 1:45 hours south of our place). Absolutely magnificent weather (early 20Cs and virtually cloudless). We did quite a bit of walking around the Conservation Park and took a trip to the Coorong (beautiful but being destroyed by stupidity).
- albums: 5

Adelaide Botanic Gardens 2011 Nov (SA) - Jan 1, 2011

Trying out my new point and shoot - a Fujix100. It looks like an old rangefinder and has a fixed 23mm (assume 46mm in 35mm terms) F2 lens. A bit quirky but great control over aperture, shutter and under/over exposure. I just wish they would include ISO in dials. ISO goes up to 12,800 (stuns me even though others even higher now). ISO 6400 can generate quite reasonable results and was one of the main reasons for purchase. - Album was created 1 year 3 months ago and modified 11 months ago

Adelaide Oval -
Lots of contention about a proposed development of this beautiful oval - hence these photos even though from a P&S at night.
To get Aussie Rules back to this oval the SA Government is willing to contribute over $500m. There is debate whether this appropriate especially in these tight times. On top of that the development could easily wreck this iconic cricket ground if the development is extended to give a bigger capacity. Current development proposal means it is smaller than current inadequate AFL stadium (very very strange). - Album was created 2 years 1 month ago and modified 2 years 1 month ago

Alice Springs - Standley Chasm (NT) by John -
My good friend John went on a bush bash with his wife's family. He has given his permission to put up some of his photos. I have touched them up a little but only a little. They did 6000km in 2 weeks, which illustrates the distances involved. I have created 6 albums to cover the 6 main areas involved and to allow geocoding. Do use FotkiMap to drill down - quite interesting to get birds eye view of the places.

Corny Point (SA) by Frank & Marg - Apr 1, 2009
-
"Corny Point Lighthouse and the beach below where the “melted granites and the black basalt etc. were. We saw crystalline basement rocks on the shore west of the Lighthouse. Geologists still disagree about the sequence here although many visit and the disputes continue….There is calcrete, coarse grained pink pegmatite with pink potassium feldspar and grey quartz. There is Amphibolite which may be Tournefort Metadolerite and another intrusion which may be ….other stuff is said “appears to be a cross-bed” You get the picture. It is the sort of place that has geologists tear their hair and come to blows with their little hammers ... " - Album was created 3 years 6 months ago and modified 2 years 7 months ago

Inneston (SA) by Frank & Marg - Apr 1, 2009
-
Inneston was a company town from 1913-1930. Gypsum was mined here and taken to Stenhouse Bay by a horse drawn train for shipping. Most of the stromatolites are hollow being composed of a delicate shell of finely laminated aragonite (calcium carbonate) trapped by filamentous mats of cyanobacteria (blue green algae). This is one of the few places in the world where they occur because the area is too saline for invertebrates which would graze on them. About 7,000 years ago Marion Bay was an inlet of the sea. Eventually this area was isolated from the sea which resulted in the deposition of gypsum as the water evaporated and the halite and gypsum was precipitated. - Album was created 3 years 6 months ago and modified 2 years 9 months ago

Photos come from a good friend who I have assisted with photography. She uses a very compact camera the Canon iXus60 & she gets lots of great photos.
KI is about 155km by 55km (4,405 sq km) and has a population of around 4,300. It is a premier tourist location in SA. About 1/2 the island is natural scrub and national park. It has a long coastline and some magnificent beaches. - Album was created 4 years 6 months ago and modified 11 months ago

Little Para Reservoir (SA) -
This reservoir with a capacity of 21,000 megalitres was commissioned in 1979 at a cost of $11.5million. It doesnt have much of a catchment area and is largely a balancing reservoir for off-peak pumping from the River Murray. It is the last major reservoir constructed in SA.
About 30km boundary. Bounded on the south by suburb of Greenwith and on the north by the township of One Tree Hill. About 20km NNE of Adelaide CBD. - Album was created 6 years ago and modified 6 years ago

Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens, SA -
Beautiful gardens just 20km SE of Adelaide UBD. Rhododendrons in full bloom. At the bottom level there was a very strong aroma of maple.
Alerted to the quality of this garden by a Victorian during a flying visit through his town of Hamilton. Linda and I are very glad we followed up on his encouragement.

Like many cities our port area has changed dramatically over the last 50 years. Ships have got much larger and the inner docks have fallen into disuse and the areas are ripe for redevelopment. Semaphore Beach (SA) -
Just went for a sunday drive to a local metropolitan beach and took the camera without any great expectations. Weather very ordinary, changeable, windy and cold. I was quite surprised at how some of the photos came out. More than one photo of the jetty from different angles and in different light. Conditions meant few people on the beach & almost gives the impression of small coastal town. - Album was created 4 years 10 months ago and modified 7 months ago
