For about a year I hosted an event called Incubator's Ball. Here was the old PR stuff....
Like so many things in this Valley the poetry/spoken word community verges on the edge of greatness. And like so many things in this Valley one of our self-inflicted hindrances to greatness is our tendency to not be concerned, involved or even aware what the other segments of the Valley are up to. If you look long enough you’ll find four, five or even more separate but healthy spoken word communities. Unfortunately many of the poets and their audiences have yet to make the necessary connections to create the needed spark to make our Valley a nationally recognized hot spot for spoken word. But thanks to many people we got all the right ingredients. We just need a good stew pot to mix it all together.
Mesa’s Loud ASS Slam Poets of Anthology Café and Essenza Cafe, Downtown’s experimentation centering around the Willow, the constant steam of new poets stretching their muscles at the Naked Bean, the not-quite-academic but not-quite-street poets of the Total Experience at Jackson’s on Third.
Once a month each venue sends a representing poet to the Incubator’s Ball.
