The Basilica of Koekelberg in Brussels (Basilica of the Sacred Heart) is the 8th largest church in the world. The Art Deco church is 89 meter high and 167 meter long and was build to commemorate the the 75th anniversary of Belgiums independence.
It is a rather sober church and stands with their raw brick walls and the modest use of gold and decoration in hard contrast to the average church in Belgium, with their ample decorations, their use of much gold, polished dark wood and lovely paintings.
It seems like the building wants to use sunlight instead, converting it into a golden cast, generously spread over the cold walls and floors and creating a dichotomic labyrinth of cold and warm, light and shadow.
You can go to the roof gallery from where you have a breath taking view over Brussels and on the Atomium.
