2008 year-end information follows - I do not know if Canidae resolved this problem with their food. I won't be going back to using it until there is a change in the formula. I am currently feeding American Natural Premium, a Wisconsin based company. Check out their web site for distributors, www.americannaturalpremium.com
To all my customers that are feeding Canidae dog food. Around the 1st of July, my pet store got a new shipment of Canidae dog food. The food was/is in a new updated looking bag. Canidae changed their dog food formula without notice to the pet store and there was no notation on the bag that Canidae had changed their dog food. In reading the back of the bag, the difference is written as a change in the Carbohydrates - they "diversified" the Carbohydrates, meaning that they added about 4 or 5 new ingredients and changed the amounts of the other ingredients in the food. The meat sources were also changed to increase the Lamb. You can go to the Canidae web site and read about the new changes.
What Canidae isn't telling you is, many dogs all over the country have gotten sick on this new formula. Lots of dogs have diarrhea, and/or throwing up, hives, sores, dull coats already, and various other problems. This really sounds more like food poisoning from a very bad run of dog food. Please go to www.consumeraffairs.com and key in Canidae. There are complaints from all over the country about sick dogs. I even had one new customer that lost her dog about 3 weeks ago because the dog couldn't digest the food and died after surgery. This was an adult Golden Retriever that already had food allergies, and why it was being fed Canidae in the first place.
Please take your dogs off Canidae until this problem is corrected. If your dogs have loose stools, vomiting, blood in their stools, or are getting dull coats, I would suspect the dog food. I wouldn't start feeding a different food to your dog by mixing it with Canidae either. Just change them immediately.
I took fecal samples to my Vet, Janesville Animal Medical Clinic. They checked the stools for everything, from worms to Coccidea and found nothing wrong with my pups. My Vet even wrote a full page letter to include in my puppy folders to let buyers know that the pups are healthy. The Vet mentions that the cause of diarrhea had to be from the change in Canidae's new formula.
