The "Rough Rider" saga begins.

On an early morning in January 1968 in Vietnam, shortly before the Tet Offensive, the 11th Motor transport Battalion, 1st Marine Division launched a convoy from Danang to Phu Bai a distance of about 60 miles. This photo shows a .50 caliber machine gunner sitting atop the cab of the first vehicle.

With the 39th Engineers, I spent about 6 months surveying this pass, from Danang to Phu Bai. After moving from Danang to Phu Bai I had to travel the pass solo in a deuce and a half. Never had a problem thank God. Our survey team saw all the previous battle sights though. It was a dirt road then and our job was to lay out the grade stakes. I was the instrument man, hope I did a good job. I was in VN in 67 & 68 also. This picture is a familiar sight.
