A beautiful country, with history and change visible everywhere.

Summer is a busy time in the villages at the foot of the Piatra Craiului range of the Carpathian Mountains. The farmers spend the whole day working in the fields, so as to do the maximum before the cold winter arrives. The work is usually done with very simple tools, and automation can hardly be seen.

The Carpathian Mountains are the most extensive mountain system in Europe after the Alps. The Southern Carpathians, located in Transylvania region, Romania, remind many of the Alps, and are therefore nicknamed "the Transylvanian Alps".

The photos here are from the highest areas of the Southern Carpathians, at about 2,500 meters. There are no permanent residences here, but since it is summer (July), people come with their sheep and cattle to graze in the mountains.
