My Hair Journey to Healthy Hair
My hair is very fine and soft, which can be annoying to deal with. I’m very athletic and tend to have hairstyles that are convenient for exercise and fitness (such as braids…just about every braid style there is, every once and a while a ponytail). May 2009 I decided to call it quits with braids and work on growing out my hair keeping health as my #1 focus.
I met a woman who also had fine hair and I loved her cut. She referred me to a hairstylist who is great with cutting hair. She did a full relaxer and gave me a short cut (between my chin and shoulders) because she said my hair had a lot of breakage from my braids. The first time I washed my hair (a week after getting a full relaxer and cut) my edges were frizzy, and dry. It looked a hot mess! I had to go back in to the salon and she cut off more hair, bring my hair length above my chin. The cut was cute, and my hair had a lot of bounce, but I felt like I was pretty much starting from scratch.
I asked my stylist about maintenance and hair care for my hair. She told me that I should wash and deep condition with J-Beverly Hills Masque conditioner weekly, and that’s all I needed to do. I washed my hair with J Beverly Hills Fragile shampoo, deep conditioned with J Beverly Hills Masque conditioner, and used J Beverly Hills leave on conditioner weekly. I also added J Beverly Hills shine drops daily when I styled my hair. My stylist told me to only apply heat to my hair once a week, but I would use the flat iron daily to apply some volume to my hair. I know this was terrible. I eventually stopped because I knew it was wrong.
My hair started shedding like crazy and looked very dry (but it usually had a nice bounce). I also experience a lot of itching and irritation to the middle/top of my scalp. I asked my stylist for suggestion and she told me that all I should be doing with my hair is washing and deep conditioning weekly. She told me numerous times that I shouldn't do anything else, and that moisturizing only clogs up your scalp. She also suggested that I see a dermatologist for the irritation and itching of my scalp.
During my last visit to the salon, I got a touchup. My stylist had to cut off inches (early Oct 2009) of my hair because it was damaged. Seeing the breakage around the middle of my hair was a reality check for me. I've decided to take my hair into my own hands. Moving forward I will be treating my hair and paying attention to its needs.
