Edmond Gouraige was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He is the second child of Frantz and Emilie Duroseau Gouraige. He was seven years old when she passed; Edmond loved his mother and her passing ...more caused him to day dream while attending Jean Marie Guilloux. He had to repeat that school year because he simply could not make the grades. That is to show how he was affected by the premature death of his mother.
Upon completion of his "école primaire", Edmond went to Lycée Anténor Firmin. There, he did very well academically ; by 1960 the young Edmond emigrated to the US with his parents.
The year 1961 was a turning point in his life. He was drafted in the United States Army. He described his experience in the ARMY as a wonderful journey. He loved the discipline, attention to details and above all the brotherhood. Edmond became an infantryman, paratrooper, raider and had some outstanding mentors. As a career soldier for twenty two years, Edmond served in a leadership position in Vietnam. He rose to the position of Assistant Commandant of a Non-commissioned Officer's Academy and , finally, as Senior Enlisted Adviser for the State of New Jersey's Reserve Division. While at the Non-commissioned Officer's academy, Edmond earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland. A rarity in those days.
While in the army, Edmond also loved art particularly Haitian art. He loved the bright colors, the concept of several Haitian artists (too many to mention). Deeply in his heart, Edmond wanted to hang some Haitian paintings in his office. He knew a young painter from Haiti. Eddi then bought a canvas, some brushes and some oil color and ask that young talented Haitian painter to come up with a subject where the national flag of his beloved country would prime.
Several months later, the painting was not delivered as promised; Saddened, Edmond regained possession of the material;he bought several books about painting. He read all of them and guess: he became a "do it yourselfer". Edmond took the time and the pain to teach himself how to paint. Now trips to the art supply store became almost a weekly routine. He asked questions, went to libraries, borrowed books in order to learn how to paint. With patience and determination Eddi was able to hang in a few months time his first painting in his office. Useless to say that some of the students who entered the Edmond's office were surprised to see that he was a college graduate a painter and a Haitian-American too. Years later ex students would approach Edmond to tell him how the sight of that diploma and the Haitian flag together motivated them to continue their education.
After military service, Edmond continued to paint. He used the G.I. bill to attend the University of Oklahoma and earned a Master's degree. He continued to work with the Army's Alcohol and Drug Abuse Control Program until retirement in 2003.
Edmond is now enjoying the slow pace of life with his wife Cristina in Switzerland... He continues to paint when inspired. He is now interested in the Sequins and Pearls art form...
We invite you to see his work. Take the time to admire his talents. Edmond enjoys comments; don't hesitate to post one. - Comments: 26

...more STATEMENT
As a Montrealer evolving in a Quebec concerned by Global warming, my questions on mass consumption has slowly risen since the year 2000, nourishing my artistic quest. My art serves as a visual critical statement, a sensitive interrogation of a daunting ecological issue of our time, the impending waste disposal problem of our consumerist culture.
As a result in my recent work, my thematic creations are linked to climatic changes, ecological and social catastrophes. Using recycling objects, cans, lids, bottle caps, computer parts and bicycle parts, I explore aesthetic concepts to represent hope and regeneration. Though, the prospect of environmental disasters is quite unsettling, creating art out of waste becomes a promising solution by imaginatively channelling our thoughts to recycling and waste disposal. Hence, the act of creating becomes an inspiring tale of life emerging out of death.
In addition, creating from recycled objects emphasizes on the individual role and personal contribution of each in reinforcing a social collective consciousness. In the face of the recent economic meltdown, and the gross economic disparity between the rich and the poor, and between wealthy nations and impoverished Third World nations, we all need to commit to social and economic justice as well as to the restoration of our environment to a health state.I believe that this vision is an essential challenge for future generations. With the arts serving a social mission, I would like for my work to contribute to the building, of a constructive society based on equity
The origin of my work is based on African contemporary and traditional art, since I am esthetical and emotionally attached to it. Reflecting on culture and identity is not unusual for an artist. However in a globalization context, my work which always reflected a cultural basis, will contribute further to our reflection on our historical, social and collective consciousness.

| | pikliz | - Painting by: Frankie Morone.
-
- Mar 20, 2006
-

Commissioners Moss and Sorenson present rendition of "Haitian Memorial Monument" at Deering Estate
(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Miami-Dade County Chairman Dennis C. Moss and Commissioner Katy ...more Sorenson co-sponsored the unveiling of a rendition of the Haitian Memorial Monument, located in Savannah, Georgia, on Friday, May 29, 2009 at the Deering Estate at Cutler in Palmetto Bay. The painting, called Resurrection 2009, is a 60" x 72" oil on canvas by Haitian artist Carl Craig. The event is part of festivities surrounding Haitian Cultural Heritage Month and is organized with the help of the Haitian-American Historical Society and the Unique Coalition of Minority Businesses (UCOMB) of South Florida. Other paintings by Alexandra Barbot, the Haitian-American Historical Society's commission artist, were displayed as well.
Carl Craig was born in Haiti and later settled in the United States, where he received his associate's degree in Liberal Arts at Miami-Dade Community College, and later his bachelor's degree in Finance and International Business at Florida International University. While he maintained a successful career as an international business consultant for many years, Craig began to focus his efforts to painting, photography, and music as recently as 2007. He is known for his works depicting scenes of Haiti and has had his art displayed in numerous private exhibits in Miami. Resurrection 2009 shows the monument currently on display at Franklin Square in Georgia which represents the Haitian soldiers who participated in the siege of Savannah in 1779. The original monument was sculpted by James Mastin.
"South Florida's close ties with Haiti make Miami-Dade County the perfect location to embrace Haitian culture with the celebration of its rich and influential history here in the United States," said Chairman Moss. "I encourage the community to view the Haitian Memorial Monument at Deering Estate."
"I'm glad to see a diverse art collection emerging at the Deering Estate. Mr. Craig's work, as well as the other pieces at the event, will allow residents to understand the contributions Haitians have made to our community and beyond," said Commissioner Sorenson.
Also speaking at the event were historians Claude Charles, PhD, and Professor Jean-Claude Exulien, who discussed the facts behind the Siege of Savannah; School Superintendent from Rochester, Minnesota Romain Dallemand; and Floyd Adams, Jr., Savannah School Board member and former Mayor of Savannah. - Comments: 2

Hersza is a Haitian National that started to paint as an adolescent in her native country of Haiti. Instead of following the traditional path of Haitians artists that mastered either “the P ...more Primitive”, “the Naïve” or “the Post-Modern Art”, she painted what Art critics describe as Art: a “visual literature”, “colors that speak”, or simply “Indigenous Art”.
Hersza’s soul creates the shape of what’s to come even before she thinks of what ‘s coming. Hersza inspiration comes from the love and the understanding of her ancestors. Her spiritually is not limited to one’s orientation but she believes that all humans are a component of a “One”; that all is in One as One is in all. She now resides in Florida with her family.

Albert Desmangles was born in Port-au-Prince on May 31, 1957. His interest in art began at a very early age. By the age of six he was sketching faces in the dust of the school's tiles. In high ...more school, his brother, noted artist Henry Bastien, taught him drawing, perspective and the use of color. Bastien also gave him several lessons in gouáçhe (a technique using paints mixed with water and gum to create opaque colors).
During his school years he was very active in the student art circle and participated in a number of exhibits, winning a prize in a drawing competition sponsored by the Haitian-German Cultural Association in 1975.
He found a job as a bookkeeper in 1978, but quickly realized that his life was not behind a desk but in front of an easel. At that point he decided to devote himself totally to art.
In 1979 he entered his uncle's workshop (sculptor Paul Desmangles), who taught him to sculpt. Then he took a few courses on industrial drawing at the Cultural Formation Center of Haiti.
In addition to painting, he was also interested in dramatic arts and singing. He went on stage with the Young Theater troupe, the National Theater and Gerard Resil's troupe. A few years later he became a member of the musical group called Kata.
Following the advice of his mentors, Bernard Sejourne, Jean-Rene Jerome, and Nehemy Jean, he studied the features of different ethnic types from America. Drawing on those lessons, he began to paint universal women, using light to illustrate their power.
Since 1980, he has participated in many exhibits in Haiti, Europe, United States, and Japan. His work is highly valued by art collectors worldwide.

- Comments: 14

Patsye's Statement: "The Next great movement in Western Art is waiting to be born. It will not be of the body or the mind but of the soul and spirit.” ( Ken Wilber, Sacred Mirrors, The V ...more Visionary Art of Alex Grey) My style of drawing Vibration Lines, lines done in black ink placed on white Bristol paper came to be in 2001. My work evolved through a deep search , which lead me to a greater universal understanding of life and of the language of the cosmos. These visionary works are created on a force within themselves both meditative and trace . The drawings contain spiritual messages of love unity, oneness and the importance of sharing. Also found in my drawings are elements of history, science,
Mythology ,voodoo ,spirituality and religions. I believe that an artist is a messenger, a force field that can find ways through different mediums to express vibrations one way or another. My work is not intended to teach but to share the lessons and messages I have received through the Light, questions on how to see beyond ones “ reality” and how to dive into the “ unknown self “ to allow the viewer to reach his or her deepest self, the soul. - Comments: 42
