In keeping with our mission, FHH’s efforts are mainly in collaboration with Fondation Espoir (P. au. P., and regional) , Ecole Saint Georges de Fleurenceau (St. Marc), Fondation Enfant Jesus (La Mardelle), Sonia B. Green Center for Rehabilitation and Education (Carrefour).
By choosing to work in an ongoing manner with a few established partners, and to help support Haitian-based organizations and institutions, FHH actively seeks funding from governmental agencies, as well as gifts from corporations and individuals in order to augment our granting capacity.

FHH’s most recent project is “Solar Water Purification” for individual families that we have first installed in LaMardelle with the collaboration of Fondation Enfant Jesus. With the scientists of EnergyQuest we are refining this model to its highest level of productivity.

FHH’s goal is to serve as a bridge between countries, permitting Haitians and the friends of Haiti around the world to participate in creating hope for all Haitians. Foundation Hope for Haiti’s Board of Directors and partners thank you in advance for your generosity.

cérémonie d’hommage aux pionniers de la lutte contre le SIDA, s’est tenue le jeudi 26 avril 2007 à l’Hôtel Montana.

Les Docteurs Gérald D. Pierre, Rodolphe Malbranche, Robert Elie, Claude Blanchard, Gueldy Parisien René, Franck Thomas, Jean Robert Mathurin, Claude Laroche, Molière Pamphile, Marie Marcelle Deschamps, Warren Johnson, Alix Lassègue, Marie Claude Péan, Adolphe Azulphar, Madeleine Boncy, Marie Eugénie Beaulieu, Serge Veillard sont les personnalités qui ont été honorées. Des plaques d’honneur et mérite ont été offertes à ces braves hommes et femmes qui, en dépit des difficultés, se sont livrés corps et âme dans la lutte contre le VIH/SIDA en Haïti.

Un hommage posthume a été rendu au Docteur Jean Michel Guérin, l’un des pionniers qui fut le premier médecin haïtien à réaliser une étude sur le SIDA.

En présence d’un public restreint et sélect composé de représentants du gouvernement, la ministre à la condition féminine et aux droits de la femme, Marie Laurence Jocelyn Lassègue, du directeur général du ministère à la santé publique, Gabriel Thimothé, des professionnels de la santé, des représentants des institutions médicales haïtiennes (GHESKIO, GREMI…) des délégations des médecins venus de la diaspora, notamment l’Association des Médecins Haïtiens à l’Etranger(AMHE), des médecins ont conté leur mésaventure dans la lutte contre cette pandémie.

Après trois jours d’échanges, de partages des expériences entre des médecins, des spécialistes de la santé venus de tous horizons au cours de ce congrès. Nombreux sont ceux-là qui témoignent de leur satisfaction « Je suis très satisfait, je vois que les gens sont vraiment imbus de la question du SIDA en Haïti. Nous autres, on est venu un peu partout de Tennessee, de la Floride, de New York, de New jersey pour apporter notre contribution à ce grand événement. On est là pour aider, pour participer, pour travailler avec l’AMH », s’est réjouis le docteur Pierre Paul Cadet, assistant trésorier et chairman des relations publiques pour la convention 2007 de l’AMHE. « C’est un grand succès » s’est félicité le docteur Claude Suréna, président de l’AMH.

Rachel Moscoso Denis, responsable des relations publiques de l’AMHE, se dit très impressionnée et très contente d’avoir participé à ce congrès « J’ai beaucoup appris et je vois que la communauté haïtienne est à l’avant-garde. Compliments ! J’ai été frappée d’un cancer, cela fera bientot 11ans. J’ai failli mourir et j’ai dû partir pour me faire traiter. Et c’est pour cela, quand j’ai eu ma guérison, j’ai décidé de travailler pour ma communauté et je me suis abritée sous l’ombrelle de l’association des Médecins à l’étranger. » Cette année l’AMHE organise la convention 2007 du 22 au 29 juin 2007 à Naples en Floride. « Nous comptons sur la participation de vous tous de la presse pour venir couvrir cet événement qui est très important pour notre communauté » a-t-elle affirmé.
Rappelons que le 56ème congrès de l’Association Médicale Haïtienne s’est déroulé du 23 au 26 avril 207 sous le thème VIH/SIDA : expérience haïtienne.

Le Jeudi 1er février 2007, a été inauguré un tout nouveau bijou en matière d’orthodontie, ...more

Situé au 7887 N Kendall Dr., #103 le nouveau temple du sourire est logé dans un bâtiment flambant neuf avec des structures d'accueil susceptibles de plaire aux plus exigeants en matière d’architecture et de gestion de l’espace. Il dit n’avoir été pour rien dans le choix de sa fille de le suivre sur les chemins de la dentisterie « Je ne lui ai jamais rien imposé, tout est venu d’elle-même, m’a-t-il confié l’air heureux et très satisfait ! »

Á mon humble avis, est venue l’ère de la dynastie des Casthely pour le plus grand bien de la communauté et on leur souhaite un très, très, très long règne.

Nous invitons donc ceux qui n’ont pas encore eu l’occasion de visiter ce haut lieu du bien-être de faire un tour « au temple du sourire éblouissant » tout en leur rappelant qu’un petit sourire peut changer la vie.

LITTLE HAITI THEN

Little Haiti is the largest Haitian neighbrhood outside of Haiti. From the late 1950's and 1960's many Haitians began to flee their country because of conditions in Haiti at that time. Thousands more fled in the 1970's and 1980's, mostly by boat. These people, know as refugees, came to the United States in search of a better life. The majority of those thar came to Florida settled in the historical subdivision of Miami called Lemon City, now also referred to as " Little Haiti".

Among the earliest Haitian Families that came to Lemon City in the mid 1960's include: Nassar, Jean-Louis, Joseph and Daniel families. Other early settlers Armand, Exulien, Charles, Cantave, Fleurizard, Monestime and Jean-Pierre.

In 1974, Mr Viter Juste, one of the area's pioneers and businessmen, gave the name "Little Port-au-Prince" to the area. It was changed shortly after that to "Little Haiti" by a newspaper reporter.

Many new immigrants had many difficulties at first and they didn't have many people to help them. Most of those that survived the rough journey at sea were sick, tired and hungry. In addition, most of them were faced with a new language and culture.

From 1965 to 1974 there were no Haitian organizations. On february 8, 1975 the first Haitian organization-Haitian American Community Association of Dade (H.A.C.A.D.)- was formed.

Among the Haitian community leaders who helped their fellow Haitians in the early days include: Reverand Jacques Montpremier, Reverand and Mrs Jean L. Louissaint and Sister Pierre Marie Armand. Many of these people took the new arrivals to their home or to their church and provided them with a temporary place to stay, food, care and medical attention.

Father Wenski ( now Bishop Wenski ) spent about 18 years in Miami helping the haitian community through the Archidiocese of Greater Miami. He spent most of his time at Notre Dame d'haiti Catholic Church, very imporant friends of the Haitian Community in the early days.

Among the many activists thar fought for equal treatment and equal rights for Haitians include: Father Gerard Jean- Juste , Jean Claude Exulien, Claude Charles, Arthur papillon, Abel Jean Simon and Rulx Jean-Bart.
There were many demonstrations, especially on 54th street, where people came to support the Haitian cause.

Among the African Americans that reached out to help the Haitians included: Reverend James E. Jenkins of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, and Ray Fontroy.

Reverend Jenkins let many refugees stay at his church and also provided them with meals. One of the first organizations to helpwas Catholic Service Bureau.

Other non-Haitians that had an impact on the haitian settlement in Miami include: Ira Golobin, Irwin Stotzky, Jack Lieberman, Eleanor Ginsberg, Rabbi Kingsly, Len Kaminsky, Rabbi Schiff, Ira Kurzban, and Cheryl Little.

The first haitian dentist in the Little Haiti was Dr Franklin Casthely. his daughter, Dr Lucie Casthely, is an orthodontist and practices next door.

Some early Haitian doctors include: Dr Cadet, Dr Bayas, Dr Hall, Dr Poliard and Dr. Michel Dodard.

Among the first Haitian business in Little Haiti were Air Tap Tap, L & P Express, Sylvia Beauty Salon, Les cousins Books and Records, Vertieres Restaurant and Neptune Restaurant.

The oldest building in Little haiti is the Dupuis building, located at 6045 NE 2nd Avenue, built in 1902. This used to be the office of Doctor DuPuis. He lived upstairs and prepared his medications downstairs. After that, it became the Lemon City Post Office wich has since closed.

Another very old building is the "Villa Paula", located at 5811 North Miami Avenue. It used to be the Cuban consulate, built in 1926 and is now the office of a fashion designer.

Miami-Edison Middle School, located at NW 2nd Avenue and 62nd Street, was built in 1928 as Miami Edison High School. the auditorium is one of the best examples of Art Deco in Miami-Dade County. Lemon City Agricultural High School ( (1915), the second high school in Miami Dade County, was formerly located on that site.

Little Haiti and Miami's Haitian community have a ...more

rich history.This booklet, geared toward younger readers, as well as a general audience, and was also inspired by my working with the Haitian community over the past thirteen years.

The research for this work has been compiled over the last nine years, since 1997, and has truly been a labor of love. Every effort has been made to ensure the information is accurate. This work is based on historical recollection through oral history interviews.

Many of the early pioneers ( 1965-1979 ), along with some of the current community leaders, are featured with brief bios and some with charcoal sketches by artist Willer Fils-Aime.

It is every intention that this piece, and the ones that follow, will be empowering to the community, especially Haitian children who have not had many resources available to them to document the history of their community. It is also my hope that through this writing more people will perceive Little Haiti as a positive place to visit now and in the future.
