On 27 December 1806, General Henri Christophe, was named president and was recognized in the north, northwest and in Artibonite (1807). Christophe maintained the Imperial Flag of Dessalines. On 28 March 1811 he was proclaimed king under the name of Henri I, and the flag was changed slightly: red in the hoist and black in the fly with, in the center, a shield with a phoenix under five five-pointed stars, all in gold on a blue background; the shield bore a crown and the latin inscription 'EX CINEREBUS NASCITUR'.
