2011 Christmas Walk from Dowhill Farm to Kirkoswald
Our Christmas Walk this year took us to Ayrshire where we did an 8.5 mile walk in very windy and at times very muddy conditions. We travelled from East Kilbride to Dowhill Farm situated on the Girvin Road a few miles from Turnberry, here we had our morning stop for tea & scones. Morning stop over we walked from Dowhill Farm heading inland towards Townhead then Drumbeg, from here as we made our way downhill towards Turnberry we had great views over the Firth of Clyde and Ailsa Craig (Paddy’s Milestone). Crossing the main road we walked towards Turnberry to head for the shore line where we walked along the sand dunes in front of the famous Turnberry Hotel and Golf Course. The plan was to walk along the beach to Turnberry Lighthouse, but due to the very high winds, high tide and a very stormy sea we were unable to do this, and had to follow the paths on the golf course to reach the lighthouse where we stopped for lunch. Lunch over, we continued on the paths over the golf course until we arrived at the Memorial to all the British, Australian & American airmen who served and lost their lives during the 2nd World War. Walking on we came to the old military airstrip where Lancaster Bombers were stationed during the war. We then headed for Maidens to walk along the seafront, here we had great views of the sea crashing onto the shore. At the end of the village we turned right to head uphill for two miles to reach Souter Johnnie’s Cottage in the village of Kirkoswald, on reaching Souter Johnnie’s our walk was completed. Souter Johnnie’s is now a restaurant, and this is where we had our very well earned excellent Christmas Dinner. Well done everyone for walking in these conditions, and thank you all for your company today. HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
