It is not as hard as people tend to say. I am reasonably unfit, yet it took only 12 hours to get there and back to the Valley. Start walking before 6 a.m. and you'll be good.
I heard some horror stories about people falling - but I guess one has to be totally careless, etc. Also, a friend said that one has to take the right gear with him there. and I HATE waking up at 6 :)))
A very few people have actually died while taking the cable route. The only gear you must care about is walking boots, bananas and climbing gloves. In that order. 8" breathable desert boots with about a hundred miles on them are the best but people routinely do the Dome in converse chucks. Waking up is another issue. Unless you stay in the Valley, you'll probably need to get over the hate and wake up at four. The earlier - the better. Bananas are necessary to replenish sugars and electrolytes. Eating them preventively helps tremendously :)
But once again - it is not really such a big deal.
Oh, the gloves are a good idea, thank you! I love bananas... hmm, come think of it, throwing banana peel at others below might make it worthwhile ;) 4am!! no-no-no! But yea - I guess it's not a biggie!
