How did he get killed? I watched him race at Anderson Raceway in Ca. in the 80s sometime. He is by far one of the Greatest racers I have ever seen.

It was in a crash in August of 1981. Him and Alan Kulwicki made contact at an ARTGO race at I believe WIR and part of the guard rail went through his car

Yes, that is correct. My father was incharge of the safety crew that worked that track and they were the first to respond after the crash. I was also there riding in my fathers truck. Very horrific accident. I will never forget the horrible day in racing history. Larry died way too soon....

I was in the pits after a race at Mesa Marin when Larry's death was announced, the place went silent .The car he brought for his racing on the West coast was fast and the driver was a "Shoe". I'll remember watching that former "goat roper" display his talent!

I had the privilege of working on Larry's Bemco and Frings cars when he came out to Calif. Even though I wasn't there when he was killed I always felt that had Frings stayed in the deal with Larry he would be alive today.Mike Chase raced the Frings car on the west coast with great success at Mesa Marin, Shasta Speedway and Phoenix.Had Larry not been killed he was scheduled to come out to Calif. and race in the Winston West Grand National series and who knows what would have happened after that. Larry will always be missed by me

If He would've been in the Frings chassis , Kulwicki would'nt have been close to him. Detjens was kicking butt in the Frings car but the ride was taken from him after  a couple of crashes. Larry slid backwards down the backstretch into an inside the track guardrail.

I was president of Larry Detjen's fan club when he was taken away from us. What complete devistation. I will never forget him even after 29 years. You will not find a nicer person. It was a privlege to have been his friend. What a dear friend!

I was there that night he was killed. He was not killed in this car, he also raced a bemco chassis car. This is the one he had already won 22 races with that year, it was fast!

The interview Larry gave to Wayne Adams Sr. at the June of 1981 Artgo show at Raceway was the last one he gave as he was killed the next week. Good thing it is on tape for the memory.

Another one that was taken from us way too early in the racing scene!
