This is likely to be a "6 cylinder" division photo. When Chuck drove in the late model division he was 77 "M". We all know who drove the 77 for many years in Late Model.
Also, in this photo Dick Raven is driving a Ford. He only did so in the 6 cylinder class.
I had not thought about Ray in many years. He was exciting to watch.
What caught my eye in this photo is that the car / driver Ray is passing is Gary Raven. The car Gary is driving belonged to his father Dick who had raced at Raceway for many years. Gary took over his father's race car / seat once he proved he could qualify faster than his father.
Another interesting fact about the car Gary is driving is that it was first owned by Kevin Reidy and had a '72 Chevelle body. Dick Raven drove the car in the '72 skin briefly (it was all black with the "111" placed on the door in duct tape). The very next year it was re-skinned with '73 to '77 Malibu sheetmetal. I do not recall the exact year, but it must have been around 1978 to 1980. Raceway had a late model sheet metal rule that forced the change.
After Dick and Gary drove this car in the Late Model division, Gary drove the car in the Sportsman Division for a few years. Those of you who follow Raceway history know that Gary went on to be a Raceway Park track champion in the Late Model Division.
Noting how beat up both cars are in this photo...I would guess it is a "sportsman" race vs. a late model.
Your picture made me cry thinking back to being a child at Raceway Park with my mom and dad. My dad has since died but I remember every 4th of July at Raceway Park and many other trips in between. It brought back great memories!
WOW! Great web site i haven't seen this car in years. There are soo many memories at this race trac i spent a lot of years here. Cherrie(Lipinski)Rogers
Hi, just wondering if you have any other pics of Jr. Hanley. I have always been a huge fan of his and remain one today. Saw him race many times at the old Checker Flag Speedway here in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The track is now closed however. I collect whatever I can of him, for my own personal collection only though. I would appreciate it if you could help me out in any way possible. Love the site and the pics of all the old late models and guys who used to run the ASA series. Hope to hear back from you if it is possible. Thanks Ron Nelson (hanley_72)
