Jerry was one of the good guys. He was very nice to all my kids when they went to the pit area after the races and always had a good and genuine smile for every one. A real tough competitor and never gave up till the checkered waved. Judy used to sit in front of my family and I. She to is genuinely a very nice person..I have his track championship picture on my wall in my sports room along with Ray Young..The sport really misses a good competitor like Jerry.
I remember this night also. The wreck started at coming out of turn 2 it was at full speed but I remember it like slow motion. I remember Wayne Adams commenting about how the rear end was completly ripped out of the car. What great memories these pictures bring back. My father and I never missed a Saturday night show from the mid to late 70's. He's gone now but these photo's bring back great memories of him.
By the time this was taken he was probably out of high school and not winning so much at Raceway. In 1977 when he was 16 he won 17 features but this was taken in 1979 or 1980. I think he only won 2 features from 1978-1980 at Raceway and then a handful more in 1984 with the #6 "Wedge" car.
you have to just smile when you see this photo! you know he is going out to kick some ass. one of the originals, who's father was one of the one's that built chicago racing!
It's taken across the street from Raceway where they kept the car at. That building was the Warsaw Inn restaurant which was across from Raceway. It burned down in the 70's and I ate there the night it burned. I remember being in the hospital as a kid and when I got out we ate there that night. When I woke up the next morning it was gone.
