The Square is at the historic centre of Shrewsbury. The market was held here from the 13th century and the old Market Hall was built in 1596. Several fine buildings are on the west side of the Square, including the 16th-century Old Plough inn. The Tourist Information Office is in the Music Hall behind the old Market Hall.
