The taxonomy of this genus is very confusing. Anisota senatoria caterpillars have an orange stripe. The caterpillars I see in Durham, like yours, have just yellow stripes. This is listed in some sources as Anisota peigleri, but this also may be a clinal variety of A. senatoria! See references in the BugGuide account at http://www.bugguide.net/node/view/5167 I have tons of these chomping on my oaks right now (9/1/04) here in Durham, NC.
Not positive, but according to photo in "Caterpillars of Eastern Forests", believe this may be the orange-striped oakworm. We are starting to see these all over our streets and our garden.
It's been a great year for caterpillars - we are finding lots of new ones all over this year! Constantly dragging out our caterpillar books trying to id them!
