Hang on to your hat.... It's Oktoberfest time in Helen, Ga. From the very young to the young at heart, everyone is having a good time at the Oktoberfest. My husband and I have a 20 year anniversary coming up. Not wedding Anniversary, but it will be 20 years this Ocktober that we have been coming to the Helen Oktoberfest. The first time we visited the Festhalle, the Sauerkrauts played and Roland Kurz from Füssen Germany was also playing that night. The Sauerkrauts are still entertaining visitors at the Oktoberfest and so is Roland Kurz. The Sauerkrauts and some of the other Bands perform favorite melodies on instruments that you can pick up at a hardware store. You can make yourself an instrument that sounds like an Alphorn with a funnel and a plastic hose. If you don't know what an Alphorn is ... look at my pictures. I like to listen to the cowbells being played but my favorite is the saw. Edelweiss or Amazing Grace played on a saw sounds absolutely beautiful. Everyone loves to particapate in the Chicken Dance the Electric Slide, the Hokey-Pokey and the Parade. If you would like to dance the Polka, don't be shy ... ask one of the guy's or ladies in the German outfits to dance. Most of them will be happy to do so. Don't expect them to be German just because they wear a German costume. Some of the people with costumes are people that came one year, liked Oktoberfest and decided that dressing up in a German Costume for Oktoberfest is lots of fun.
