Picture Story 2: Florida's Drought
South Florida relies heavily on water. Native flora and fauna depend on a cycle of tropical summers and crispy, dry winters. An early dry season this year is leaving much of the state in drought conditions. Water bodies shrink, and plants and animals are forced to share dwindling resources. The residents of South Florida are also affected. Prudent water management at Lake Okeechobee in Central Florida means easy living for those south of the massive lake. Improper water management combined with heavy hurricane seasons brings water restrictions on the large agriculture industry down to the household water-hungry lawn. No human, plant, or animal is unaffected by drought conditions.
