Nova Scotia 2009
My trip to Nova Scotia in 2009. The trip began with six days at Camp Mini Ha Ha at the Annapolis Basin Convention Centre. Then to Fall River (just outside Halifax) for a couple more days of mini-ing with friends. Then off to Cape Breton where we attempted to drive the Cabot Trail and visited Louisbourg, the largest historical reconstruction in Canada. http://www.louisbourg.ca/fort/

2013-08-17 extended family get together

Don't get to see as much of BIL Grahame's family as we would always like but today Mom and I went over to DS Shirley and her husband Grahame's as his sister, Katheryne (sp) and her DH Chris, were visiting from New Zealand. I had met Katheryne, Grahame's mother and Chris and Katheryne's daughter, Helen, about 25 years ago when they were here.

Grahame's daughter, Katie; her fiance Nick; his son, Mike, Mike's SO, Joan; his grandson Grahame and his wife Nikita and their daughter Story were also there.

Had the loveliest visit with everyone!

I hate that I didn't take more pictures...but so what else is new!?!

Didn't get a picture of Nick because by the time I actually got the camera out, he was in the kitchen preparing the dinner that he and Katie had brought for everyone!!

Afternoon at Holly's
Aug 20, 2011

Our Miniature Club doesn't meet over the summer but most years one of our members will have an open house to show off her miniatures. This year we met at Holly's and I'm still on mini overload! These pictures don't even begin to show all of her work!

Art Gallery

In 2009, I attended Camp Mini Ha Ha in Nova Scotia. My intention was to make that year's project into an art gallery and I bought quite a few pieces of miniature art while I was in Nova Scotia. That roombox never did come together but in July I found a roombox that would be perfect for the project and finally gather up all my art and put together a gallery.

This was a fun little project that just came together one morning. Our daughter gave me a Mini Executive Sandbox by Toysmith http://tinyurl.com/dxfvqy and just the day before I had found some paper parasols with 5" handles at the dollar store. The perfect combination for inspiration.

Bombay House

This is my all-time favourite dollhouse. Because the Bombay Company didn't ship to Canada, DD Leanne picked it up for me when she lived in Texas and brought it with her when she moved home.

When I finally got it, I assembled it right away, painted it and put in flooring. At that time the stairs were only just propped in place. A few years later I started to tapewire it but got stalled on that too. But most of the furniture was in place and I just sort of left it at that.

Last fall, a member of one of my online groups issued a challenge to other members to finish UFOs and I took up the challenge of finishing the Bombay House.

I redid the floors, added all the wiring, installed the stairs and built a partial wall between the stairs and the sleeping area to create a small sitting room.

I still need to trim the doors and windows and install curtains/drapes. I plan on building a window seat in the alcove that's part of the sitting room.

Calgary Mini Trip
Nov 28, 2009

While my friend Cheryl H. was still here from Nova Scotia, we wanted to go to to Calgary and see our mini friend Wendy W. who had been unable to come up for Mini Day Out. Her friend Sue L. very kindly offered to host both us and a mini making frenzy at her home.
Their friend Becky was working most of the weekend but was able to join us for several hours Saturday evening. Although we had planned to arrive Friday evening, bad roads interfered and we ended up staying in a small town halfway there Friday night. The upside of that was an incredible garage sale being held to support the local museum. We found some wonderful mini things there.
When we finally arrived, we dug into gift bags that Wendy and Sue had put together for us and had a sharing session of fabric and trims I had brought along.
Our project for the weekend was filling a Michael's hutch with bathroom items. Sue and Wendy had worked ahead and painted the hutches for us so we were able to get straight into filling them.

Christmas house

For Christmas 1978, DS Sean and DD Leanne gave me the Arthur dollhouse kit. I didn't know anyone who made dollhouses, didn't know about Nutshell News, but I just went ahead and built it...with a glue gun yet. I'm sure I'd do things much differently now but the poor thing has survived this long and looks good for a long time yet. It went through a lot of changes over the years, including several years spent at school as a teaching aid in a French classroom. Two years ago I finished re-doing it as a Christmas house for Leanne. That December she picked it up to take to her kindergarten classroom for Christmas. While it was still in the van, the van was broken into and all the Christmas gifts we were sending to Ontario were stolen. But the house wasn't touched!

Christmas Shop
Jul 24, 2009

Originally I was going to make my Christmas shop in the shop from Camp Mini Ha Ha 2009 but one of the displays we had there was in a display case like this and since I had one at home, I decided that it would house my Christmas shop.
I'm still busy making things to fill it. Between these and my stash, I suspect it will be one crowded shop!

And there's where I left it in July 2009 (first 19 pictures).

The problem with the display case is that there is an approximately 1/2" x 1/4" wooden lip at the edges of the glass and in order to have display cabinets, etc., against the glass they have to be built in which means all work needs to be done through the bottom of the top of the display case. It took me a lot of thought before I could see in my mind just how I could handle this.

It finally came together in my head in February http://stalbertmini.blogspot.ca/2014/02/the-christmas-shop.html so work began!

To see more pictures and how-tos from this project you can look on my blog from February 9,2014, to March 21, 2014. http://stalbertmini.blogspot.ca/

Church
Nov 6, 2008

One of the workshops at Camp Mini Ha Ha 2008 was a church pew. So of course I needed a place to put it. As so often happens, Joann Swanson came to the rescue with her how-to in the November, 1988, Nutshell News.

My mother fell and broke her pelvis in 2012. It wasn't a very bad break and she was able to return to her apartment a week later. My sisters and I gave this vignette to her 'across the hall' neighbour as a thank you for all the help she gave Mom when she returned home.

Dad's workshop
Jun 14, 2007

I had bought this breadbox at a garage sale about six years ago and decided “it was time”. My first thought was to make a very elegant bedroom using a HOM four-poster bed I had made. But the bed was too high! Then I thought about doing an old-fashioned kitchen but the stove I had was on the small side and I didn’t feel up to tackling the stove kit in my stash.

A couple nights later, I was reading an old Nutshell News miniature magazine (my favourite bedtime reading) and Joann Swanson suggested “Why don’t you make an attic?” Excellent idea! And heavenly only knows, I have enough “stuff” to fill an attic. But after I struggled with deciding whether to leave the beams open, insulate them, or drywall them, that lost its charm.

Then it came to me! A fellow miniaturist Cathy Verbicki had given me a wonderful greenhouse that I had put on my “street” of houses in my dining room and I no longer had room for the garage that was under construction there. I would take everything I had collected for the garage and put it in the breadbox.

I made the floor and walls from foamcore and dry fitted them. I didn’t want to paint the floor because it would probably warp the foamcore so I found an image of cement on Google, printed it out and glued it to the floor using rubber cement.

I knew I wanted to try using a battery operated light from a dollar store in the ceiling so I cut that from matboard and cut a hole in it so the light could be dropped in. Slots were cut in the side and back walls so the ceiling could be slid in and out to change batteries in the light. (None of this is glued – everything is just fitted in place and can be removed.)
At this point, I realized, this wasn’t just any garage but that it had morphed into my Dad’s workshop in the garage of their last house.
And, yes, his workshop was that tidy!

Update: I gave this to my DS Shirley for Christmas 2012. We had discussed a couple times the fact that I had never made a miniature scene for her but could never come up with one that was the right fit. But when I decided to pass this on to her, we both knew I had made the right decision.

Edmonton Show and Sale 2012

Pictures from our workshop with Lori-Ann Pots on Saturday, setup for the sale Sunday morning, the Little Fair on the Prairie display, other displays and the People's Choice winners....and two prototypes of this coming year's project.

Club members had made enough stalls, booths and carts to cover 72 square feet of tables. Holly made 12 yards of bunting to tie it all together.

In addition to the fair itself, we had a 4' x 6' picnic and playground area in the centre of the room.

Estate Sale June 22, 2013

The Miniature Enthusiasts of Edmonton Club has been asked by the family of a former member to handle the sale of her miniatures. We will be doing so at a garage sale at 9803 - 152 Street, Edmonton, AB, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013.

Due to the nature of the sale, there will be absolutely no pre-sales. Items will be available only during garage sale hours.

There will be eight 8` tables covered with empty roomboxes; radio cabinets; furniture - dollar store to Bespaq to artisan; landscaping supplies; books and magazines; accessories (many by artisans such as Ladybug, Janice Crawley and several local artisans); dolls (artisan, resin and kits); beads; fabrics and trims; suppplies; tools; furniture and accessory kits; and Hallmark ornaments. Most of the items are 1:12 scale but there is a good selection of smaller scales.

Hopefully, the pictures will give you an idea of some of the scope of the miniatures and supplies available.

Finally

After a long dry spell, I've actually worked on something. The glass in the door of the Reutter shop broke in shipping so I made a new 'glass' with heavy plastic and some Martha Stewart gold 'icing borders'. It holds some of my more special pieces. The black case was bought at Value Village and now houses my Montacute Miniatures nativity scene.

Gerry's office

When my good friend and colleague retired I made this vignette of his office for him. This was my first attempt at copying a room. Took some poetic licence since I only showed two walls but both Gerry and I were pleased with the end result. It's an older piece but didn't realize until this morning that pictures of it weren't posted here.

Harry Potter

A couple of years ago, I picked up the Harry Potter doll at Chapters on clearance, knowing at some point I wanted to do a vignette for DD Leanne who is a big HP fan. Along the way, I bought the owl from Danielle Perry at http://www.dpminiatures.com , the flasks and rack from Dale Bylsma at Petite Images in Port Perry, ON. Then last week I got the stationery box at our Coffee Club gift exchange. The shelves were made with beads from a bracelet (tutorial in my Trash to Treasure album). Suddenly everything came together in time to give it to Leanne for Christmas. Well, that was almost 4 1/2 years ago and it's still on my bookshelf so I'm taking it to Peterborough with me and giving it to DGS Jonah. Told Leanne sometime ago that I was going to do that!

Cheryl H., Lucille L. and I drove to Kelowna for the miniature show and sale on April 24. We left Edmonton Thursday morning, stopped at a hobby shop in Calgary and got to Kelowna that night. Friday we did a wine tour and tasting and tasted all flavours of cheese and gelato at a goat farm. Saturday was the Show and Sale and Sunday I got in some shopping. Then home again on Monday. Leo Nickerson art studio
Apr 3, 2011

I received an e-mail from the art teacher (the daughter of a friend and former co-worker - see the album here of Gerry's office) at Leo Nickerson School. The students are painting chairs in various themes and auctioning them with proceeds going to the Stollery Children's Hospital. There will be a silent auction of other donated art in conjunction with the live auction of the chairs.

I confirmed that I would donate a miniature vignette. The more I thought about it, I wanted to do a miniature of a portion of the art studio. So I made arrangements to go to the school and take pictures of the room on March 22.

The auction is on April 20 but the finished pieces are to be at the school on April 11. So it's a pretty tight deadline.

Got a slight extension on the deadline and finished it April 12.

There are over 150 pieces in it and all but about 10 were made totally from scratch.

Almost hate to let this one go.

The daughter of a dear friend has asked me to take part in an Arts Day at the school as part of Alberta Arts Day. Library Dollhouse

About two years ago, with a lot of help and encouragement from a fellow American miniaturist Dick Tabor, the Miniature Enthusiasts of Edmonton club began working on a dollhouse filled with references to children's literature. Dick provided a list of literature he had used in his dollhouse with the same theme and club member Joanne Root who works in the children's department of the St. Albert Public library added her suggestions.

The house, an RGT QuickBuild colonial, was purchased from a MEE member who had used it as a demonstration model in her business. Members of the club were divided into geographical groups and each group was assigned a room in the house to furnish.

The house was completed and displayed at our Show and Sale on September 18, 2011, and donated to the Children's Department of the St. Albert Public Library on October 11, 2011.

After the presentation of the house, the library hosted a lovely tea party for club members who were able to attend.

MEE 2010 Show and Sale
Sep 19, 2010

The Miniature Enthusiasts of Edmonton held their 14th annual show and sale yesterday and dare I say it was one of our best. Unfortunately 3 of our dealers had to cancel due to illness but that space was quickly taken over by displays. Should have taken more pictures but got busy with other things - like buying! Darn it - I know I took a picture of the prize-winning roombox but it's nowhere to be found!

Mother's Day Cards
May 5, 2009

Our daughter who teaches kindergarten is celebrating May as Fine Arts Month with her students and asked me to come up with something in miniature for them to do. We decided to combine miniatures with a Mother's Day card and do a little living room vignette.

The students coloured a picture for the front of the card and for the back completed the sentence "I love my mom because.."

I designed the cardstock and fabric chairs several years ago. The kits for the flower pots were supplied by my miniature club. The tables are pizza props. Some flooring is felt and some is scrapbooking paper.

The final cards have a picture of the student on the wall but those can't be shown due to privacy issues.

My Christmas present to myself
Dec 24, 2009

When you have over a dozen X-Acto knives and you can't find even one, it's definitely time to clean! Not just the surface but sort through things and put them away properly, including all the personal filing that has piled up. It's just past 11:30 p.m. so I still should be able to be asleep before Santa arrives. Think he'll be impressed?

my workroom
Jul 31, 2006

My workroom is in the master bedroom of our condo. It's 17' x 12'. At one end is a small hallway with closets on either side that leads to a bathroom. There've been a few changes since these pictures were taken but nothing major.

Pedlar's Cart
Jun 17, 2009

Each year the St. Albert club does a project to show at the Edmonton Show and Sale. (We're all also members of the Edmonton club.) This year Sunni cut out and virtually completed pedlar's carts for all of us to finish. All we had to do was paint them, add the wheels, front support, middle shelf and a roof.

Rather than the wooden roof, I plan to make a fabric one and eventually I think I'll use it to display my plants, flowers and vases. Other possibilities are to clear out what's left of my toy stash after I did the toy store, or use up my Christmas-related stash (although I'm hoping most of that will be used in my Christmas shop I'll be doing at CMHH09 in September).......so many possibilities!

But for today, I wanted to have something to show off at coffee this afternoon so I raided my stash for my cushions, throws and afghans and used it to display them.

Penthouse
Mar 16, 2009

The basic idea for this came a good ten years ago. I had hoped to use up furniture from my stash to furnish it but somehow it didn't work out that way. The room is made from Ultra Plus which is a very dense foam between two sheets of plastic. Can be cut by hand and doesn't warp. The living room's false back wall opens on to a balcony with a background of cityscape fabric.

purchases Edmonton Show and Sale
Sep 20, 2009

I showed remarkable restraint at the sale today. Here's what I bought. (Well, not quite all I bought, as time and RL got away with me and I ended up buying my exchange gifts for CMHH – it was that or relinquish what sanity I had left.)

Quiltessential quilt show Jan 13 - 12
Jan 13, 2013

Quiltessential is a quilt shop just down the street from me. They give classes 320 days of the year so there's a lot of quilting being done! These pictures are from their annual show of some of the previous year's work done by students.
Some great eye candy here. I've only labelled a couple because I don't know much about quilting and didn't have a pen to write down the descriptions as they were shown.

Some I used auto correct on but some I had to leave a bit dark because auto correct made them worse. LOL

Scentimental Journey
Jun 23, 2009

This really should be called "two steps forward, one step back" since the whole process has been like that.

Once I had made all the perfume bottles from the food picks (Trash to Treasure album), I needed a place to put them. Inspired by "La Parfumerie", a Sue Ann "Ladybug" Thwaite class a friend had taken, I thought I would display them simply on shelves in a little shadow box....and I had a Dollarama shadow box that would be perfect. Ha! The slides I use for glass shelves are 1" deep and won't fit in that shadow box. But I had a wooden display case that my Mom had given me some years ago. It was bigger than I wanted but maybe I could make it work.

Sisters' and Mom Weekend
Aug 25, 2011

To celebrate Mom's 88th birthday, DS Shirley, Mom and I drove up to Peace River to DS Marie and DBIL Robert's on Tuesday. On Wednesday (Mom's birthday), we were joined by DS Carol and DBIL Fred and celebrated both Mom's 88th and Carol's 60th birthdays (although Carol's isn't actually until November). On Thursday, we drove up to Bluesky and had lunch at Carol and Fred's then drove up to Worsley (where we lived from 1947 to 1954) then had a picnic at Running Lake Park where Mom and Dad and Marie's family had camped years ago.
Wonderful couple days!!!

St Valentines Day Massacure
Feb 11, 2011

What a moving morning! In January DD Leanne had dyed her hair pink in preparation for the St. Valentine’s Day Hair Massacure http://hairmassacure.com/event-facts and today was the day to have it shaved. The Hair Massacure is currently working on its 8th year as a family run event, inspired by Kali MacDonald, youngest daughter of the MacDonald family. Kali was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 2. Kali has been in remission for 6 years. Since 2003, $4,630,000 has been raised by the Hair Massacure for Edmonton and Northern Alberta. The 2010 event raised over ONE MILLION DOLLARS!
Funds raised here are split between Make-A-Wish® Northern Alberta, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation® (towards Pediatric Oncology - childhood cancer), and the Ronald McDonald House Foundation of Northern Alberta.

T2T Challenge 2010

These were made as part of a Trash to Treasure Challenge on the Canada Minis Yahoo group.

This project is meant for FUN FUN FUN! It is not a competition. It is a chance to try things
you might not normally do - to think outside the box.
First you need to find a box or container to house your project. The theme of the project is
up to you. Next you need to go on a mini scavenger hunt. Find the following 25 items and
lay them out on a tray or cookie sheet in front of you. This will help you come up with a
plan which usually starts by making one thing. It will evolve from there. You must use 20 of
the following 25 objects and list which 5 you did not use. As well - you may add any one
item of your own choosing from your own stash.
You may use any tools, glue or paint to complete this project. You may also use your
computer. (Hint - printies are allowed as long as you stick to the items on the list)
This project can be in any scale. Your creativity is most important - not exact scale.
You must use part of each item on your list. You don't have to use the entire piece but if
there is a number - you must use part of each.
These are the items to use. Now start searching.... And remember to have fun.
1. Pipe Cleaner (any colour)
2. Plastic Pizza Box insert (little white thing)
3. 4 bottle caps (any type)
4. 2.Binder Clips (any size or colour)

11. 5 stir sticks (any type)
12. dixie kitchen or bathroom cup

Tickle Trunk

If you're unfamiliar with the term 'tickle trunk', check out the third paragraph http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Dressup .

My dear friend Joanne and I were in Dollarama one day and spotted a couple play items and got talking about playing dressup when we were young. That prompted the idea to make a tickle trunk for my grandchildren, Jonah and Holly.

Most of the items are from Dollarama, some were contributed by my friend and neighbour Barb and some were from "Put and Take", a recycling program in my sister Marie's hometown.

Trash to Treasure
Jun 19, 2009

One of the joys of being a miniaturist is finding something in real life and seeing how you can turn it into something miniature. While I generally remember to share these with friends, I usually forget to post pictures. With this new album, I hope to share some of these ideas.

Two Story Roombox

This whole project started out when I won a wooden filing cabinet on e-bay. It was originally intended for a gentleman's study but when it came, it announced in no uncertain terms that it didn't want to be in a gentleman's study - it wanted to be in a detective's office c. 1940. Who was I to argue? LOL

I had a roombox that would work so started gathering things for it and putting it together in my mind.

Than friends and I went to the Kelowna BC Show and Sale earlier this year. One of the members was selling a two story roombox for only $20 and I just had to have it! There was a completed one on show that had a young couple upstairs with the man playing a musical instrument and the elderly man downstairs pounding on the ceiling with a broom. It was such a perfect scene that I knew I couldn't top it.

After I got home and thought about it for a couple months, decided that my detective's office should be upstairs with (what else) a bar below.

And there it languished with the only work being done on it being in my head - until now!

On May 10, I began serious work on the detective's office and completed it on May 23.

I'll begin work on the bar section tomorrow.

Well, I did get the bar started at that point but got majorly stalled last August!

But last Tuesday, I got started again and finished it today.

Just goes to show that some things are never finished! July 2013 Joanne gifted me with a 'house of cards' that just reinforces my backstory of my detective as being not too successful/busy! LOL

Victorian Parlour
May 8, 2011

Last October while I was visiting my friend Cheryl in Nova Scotia, she took me to a 'downsizing' sale a friend was holding.

Now I don't do period rooms but two pieces in her collection just screamed "Buy Me!" - which I did.

The room finally came together over the past week. You can read all about the journey on my blog http://stalbertmini.blogspot.com/

Update: July 2013 A couple years ago Judy Mitchell gave me a Victorian doll she had made that I had always wanted to go in this scene but she wouldn't fit. At the Estate sale I bought a wonderful chord organ by Penny Spence that I used to replace the grand piano - and that allowed me to change the scene once again.

Wicker Chair
Apr 19, 2009

Our Edmonton Club (Miniature Enthusiasts of Edmonton) held their all-day workshop yesterday. We made a fanback wicker chair from a kit by Warling Miniatures.
I'm not a fan of wicker in RL so was not particularly enthusiastic at the thought of doing it in miniature. But learning curve aside, I'm quite pleased with how my first effort turned out, and I'm thinking about what I can do with the waxed linen in my stash

workroom 2011
Mar 17, 2011

It was time for a deep-down cleanout of my workroom - and it took months. I sold some tools, storage cabinets and vignette settings and gave away boxes and more boxes of items I knew I would not be using or had a LOT of.

I rearranged some of the furniture and moved my work table from the middle of the room to a wall. Looks bigger but don't know yet if I like this arrangement over the old.

Somehow with all the cleanout I thought I should have more room on my shelves but it didn't quite work out that way.

But I do now have all my current projects on shelves with shoeboxes of possible contents with them.
